@researchfairy I love the Nate story, because they expected people to spend $1 per purchase so that “AI” (underpaid workers in the Philippines) could do what your web browser’s autocomplete could already handle

Still grumbling about racial exploitation involved in ChatGPT

When thinking about whether or not to use ChatGPT, ask yourself

"How many times am I willing to call a Kenyan worker the n-word in order to get this task done?"

If the answer is zero, don't use ChatGPT

If the answer is greater than zero, what the fuck is wrong with you

We all know that generative AI's main purpose is to obscure the fact that you're outsourcing work that is actually trauma-inducing to underpaid people in countries with weaker worker protections in a manner that prevents you from feeling bad about how they are exploited

But did you know that generative AI can also write a shitty essay with fabricated citations for you too?

Better learn how to use it, or you'll be left behind!!

Studying philosophy prepared me to encounter extremely difficult, nuanced questions about what the right thing to do is, and to interrogate closely how we conceive of our justifications for weighing different concerns

But turns out the actual moral dilemma that's stumping us all is:

"If we invented a machine that does a shittier job of your office work for pennies, but it was powered by torturing people in Kenya, would it be okay to pay for fewer office workers back home?"

tired: protests are important, they are a way to demand change

wired: protests are useless, protests can't possibly cause change

inspired: protests are important, they're a way for likeminded people to meet and organize further actions that *do* cause change, and serve as a threat to established powers that this will happen

Is there a term in linguistics for when someone creates a brand name that they think is a clever play on words, and people end up pronouncing it completely differently thus ruining the pun?

I'm thinking of things like Ko-fi, which is a play on "coffee" but everyone pronounces it “KOE-fee”.

So this morning I was deep-diving into the dude who apparently added fake speaker profiles of women in tech who don't exist onto a conference website (presumably to make it seem more inclusive than it is) and now this. I mean this is basically a kind of catfishing and AI isn't necessary for creating fake people for all kinds of purposes, but I have a feeling it's still going to mean we'll see a lot more of them. futurism.com/sports-illustrate

Discussion of how to market genocide in Palestine, articles referencing dead children mentioned

tiktok.com/t/ZPRvC3MJf/

This is a Tiktok video (6:18) made by a professional copywriter (user @howtowritecopy on Tiktok) showing all of us how journalists can use specific language to make us empathize or not empathize with victims of violence. She takes two headlines from the past few months and compares them.

Even if you know propaganda is happening and you know some of the tricks they use to manipulate the masses, you are still susceptible. The people producing these media pieces have been trained by experts in how to make you look away and stop paying attention when it suits them.

As consumers of news media, it is absolutely essential that we all learn these techniques to allow us to critically analyze the information we are given in order to know what they want us to think. This way, we can resist their chosen narratives and understand more accurately what is really going on.

This is so, so so important. If you can, please take a few minutes out of your day to learn things that our institutions don't want us to know. I hope you find it as informative as I did!

I want to make a font out of my own handwriting, anyone have any good tips on how to do that?

Blocking anyone posting wojaks, mspaint or virgin/chad memes on sight. Zero tolerance for fash channer bullshit, or anyone helping popularize it #OnHere. It's toxic shit, it comes from a hellhole, and it cannot be redeemed by your efforts, hope this helps in your understanding

If you boost it, fucking wise up and don't.

Tesla workers in Sweden go on strike.
Tesla hires strikebreakers.
In response, various other workers start sabotaging Tesla. Their cars can't be unloaded from ships because dockworkers won't touch them, postal workers are apparently stalling delivery of license plates for teslas.

Naturally, Elon Musk reacts in a sane way
Haha just kidding he now wants to sue the state of Sweden

just saw a boost of a toot containing a screenshot of a bluesky post that contained a screenshot of an email containing only text. bluesky has an overlay that denotes that the screenshot of the email has alt text but it is not displayed in the screenshot. the screenshot of the screenshot does not have alt text. everyone involved is a damned sinner. I don't ask that we all use the same tools, or use the tools the same way, but can we at least endeavor to not use them to make something shittier before passing it on to people we ostensibly enjoy sharing things with?

While a busy schedule can be very benificial, please make sure to pay attention to your body's needs. It will communicate when it feels exhausted, and by responding to it, you maintain your work efficiency in the long run.

That happy "Wow! I hate this more!" comic, but with first hating Nix semicolon syntax and then discovering how Turtle (RDF) uses semicolons

Two years ago today I tested positive for Covid. I was fit and healthy and expected to be back to normal in a few days. It's been two years and I still can't walk 50 yards.

The only people who think #LongCovid is no big deal are those who don’t know enough about it.

we gotta stop calling LLMs "ai" you gays:

there's nothing intelligent about it; it's literally not "AI" at all, in the same way that throwing darts completely randomly at a board and occasionally hitting triple 20, then optimizing for that, isn't "playing darts"
it validates the marketing work done by total asshole shills; it's giving them oxygen
makes it sound way cooler than it is, and makes people working on it sound way smarter than they are (didn't we learn this lesson with blockchain? They're dickhead, world-burning capitalist charlatans all the way down)

So instead of "ai" I propose we start calling large language models "ugg", for "unwanted garbage generator".

Advantages of "ugg":

sounds like something a caveman would say
can be grunted in frustration
emphasizes that it's fucking garbage

Thank you!

Like nothing says “we dont hire nor consult people with accessibility needs when developing accessibility features” as making said features:

1: turned off by default
2: not visible except for ppl who use 3rd party voiceover tools
3: requires too many steps to use
4: difficult or not possible to streamline for cross posting (copy paste)
5: feature obscures or alter the original post way more than needed

I see these things on bluesky, tumblr and official mastodon app. Embarassing.

hey my friend @heckinwes is looking for resources on worker's rights in seattle washington

his roomie feels like she's being unfairly retaliated against and needs to talk to someone who knows the law better

so he asked me to make this post 😁

the reason the phrase "let's agree to disagree on our political views" always bugs me is because it's kind of impossible for me to be friends with people, who, say, want to see people like me in the pits of hell, or think threatening people with certain death unless they work is okay. you can't divorce ethics from politics

Fuck software that clears your input if you start typing before something has fully loaded
