yeah wouldn’t it suck if like, someone had private information about you that you didn’t want to be misused?

#poll for gamedevs who primarily use Unity (either now or in the last few weeks), and nobody else:

What game engine are you most interested in using for your next game?

Oh my goodness I've just learned a thing about The Matrix that causes it to make a lot more sense: In the original script the humans were used as neural network compute clusters by the Machines and as a crucial component of The Matrix itself.

Which is why humans who were aware of the simulation could control aspects of The Matrix - their minds were part of its foundation.

Unfortunately the test audiences had trouble understanding this concept so the studio changed the human role to "batteries".

Quote dunking on the European Commission

"Multilingualism is one of the founding principles that make Europe unique"

Fuck all the way off. Multilingualism is the norm across history, geography and sociology and no region of the world has brought forth more hegemonic monolingual cultures than Europe. And through what? Through imperialism

"In the south of Ireland, trans women have been able to declare themselves women and have the state change their documentation to reflect that declaration since 2015. The sky has not fallen. Cis women have not lost anything whatsoever from this. If anything, all of Irish feminism has gained: our struggle for bodily autonomy gains in strength and momentum through this victory for our trans sisters."

I know the UK government hates refugees (and the queers and the poor and the... etc.), but *damn* "fearing discrimination [...] should not be enough to qualify for international refugee protection" was not a Home Office position I thought they'd be saying *out loud* 😶

Last call for Corail in Hauts-de-France 🚨

SNCF is sending goodbye Corail e-mails to the passengers...

People not wearing masks because they’re worried about standing out is people not liking them is so wild. . Like, I’m not making my autoimmune disease worse or getting early dementia just so you will like me more. I do not give a flying fuck if people think I have illness anxiety or my students think I’m weird. Their feelings about me are not relevant to my personal health choices.

Game dev is the bizarro world where everything you've learned in high school is still relevant.

Also, if you're tempted to respond to this with "everything I've ever looked for has been easily available", that's how I'll know you're from the Anglosphere

I wish more people were working on the actual unsolved (technical) problem in decentralization: unpopular data availability.

My brain cannot comprehend the concept of dating
What does it even mean to date someone

Like, the people are together and uhhh

How does it differ from hanging around them and spending time watching them do things/doing fun things together

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was getting us all to refer to creative work as “content”

One of the good things that came with me from my time with MetaFilter (I eventually took the "wipe all my content from the site, please" option because I was done with their very white liberal moderation priorities - I was "kalessin" and I was very active with site policy and politics. You can still see people's replies to my comments even though you can't see the original comments there anymore), was commentary on "ask vs guess culture".

The conceit was asserted by user "tangerine" way back in 2007 and is meant as one guideline to understanding culture and society.

Here's the link: ask.metafilter.com/55153/Whats

The conceit is that there are "two types of people" though later thought put it on a spectrum. Askers just ask for what they want, and guessers guess how it would go if they asked, and time and tweak and prepare for the asking so the answer will inevitably be "yes". And of course there's culture clash between askers and guessers, both feeling like the other is a bit rude.

After 16 years of sitting with this concept I've finally figured out that guessing culture _has to_ work presupposing supremacist culture and priorities. And asking culture is under no obligation to do so.

Politically, I should try to shift to being an asker. I should ask for what I want. And expect better.

I don't know that I like the term "blindness" here...
