PS: I don't share this story to brag or to complain about others. I just hope it can give people an example and ideas.

It is not inherently a failing if a person contracts Covid.
However, it is a failing if leaders (whether of small groups or large governments) don't enact meaningful mitigations to try to prevent it.

I want people to know that they aren't alone, that there are still others masking and prioritizing health, and that not everyone is ok with locking disabled people out of society.

Only that one group got sick.
No one else at our event wound up ill or testing positive.
We didn't have transmission.

It's entirely possible to have responsible gatherings that take the wellbeing of attendees into account while still making it possible for old friends to see eachother and for new friendships to be made.
It takes a bit of extra planning and consideration, but know that you can do it.

We hear lots about Covid transmission at gatherings that had no precautions, but not enough about events where folks were successfully protected.

I coordinated a meetup for Kind.Social during PAX West '23 which was deliberately held outdoors with free 3M VFlex N95s. :vflex:

Covid was present, but it didn't spread.

The Dutch Mountains. Man made mountains, mostly on former garbage dumps, renatured and opened for recreational purposes in the Netherlands (Source: Volkskrant 23 September 2023)

It's annoying when people who aren't furry or autistic or queer insist that making local friends is as easy as just going outside. Sure it might be when the world is made for you.

Streaming platform executives:
“I don’t think enough people are pirating. Let’s see what we can do about that.”

I somehow ended up getting on an entirely empty carriage on the Bakerloo line from Piccadilly Circus

This doesn’t feel right, it’s 5pm on a Saturday

One way to #TalkBetterAboutAI when referring to use of #TextGenerators is to try using words like "typed," "input," or "entered" instead of "asked."

To describe the text generator (aka #LLM) behavior, instead of "answered," try "generated" or even "completed" or "continued."

It might feel a bit awkward. (I know it does for me!) But I think it could be a useful experiment, at least, to practice reframing our relationship to these tools.

What are phrases you would use to #TalkBetterAboutAI?

civility and peaceful protest, directed at reader

LB: broadly speaking, the reason you feel that civility and "peaceful protest" work fine for you, is probably because you're part of the demographic that the system is built for.

It's not the civility itself that makes it work for you. It's your position in society.

More marginalized folks do not benefit from such a position, and telling them that they should be less radical and more civil to accomplish things is... well, a very good way to show your privilege, let's put it that way.

regex decompiler: you input a regex and it outputs a list of all strings matching the regex (throwing an error on * and +)

I'd be a lot more willing to believe the whole "what if reality is a simulation?" hypothesis if I didn't know speedrunners.

If you see somebody described as "he's just like that" or "he can't help himself", ask if he's like that when he might be held accountable. E.g., in front of his boss, his mom, at church, when a video camera is recording.

Occasionally, he really can't help himself. But it usually turns out that he can, and that there's a pattern to when he can't. E.g., he's a jerk to juniors and peer women, but perfectly controlled in front of his male boss. That's when you know it's not illness, it's abuse.

meta, social.tchncs.de

Growing increasingly tired of the aggressive replyguying coming from social.tchncs.de, *almost* all of my interactions from that instance are bad...

If you're a follower and you're on that instance, I'd recommend looking for a better neighbourhood, because it seems I'm not the only one who's running out of patience with that place, so I imagine it won't be long before it gets defederated from places, if that isn't already happening

For SNCF the last summer was a big succes, with 80% occupancy of the TGV’s and 40% of all trains sold out. But there is something hidden from this success story: SNCF reduced their fleet of TGV’s from 2013 to 2023 by 20%, shredding about 30.000 available seats.
