Like, I basically started over my bookkeeping for the entirety of 2022 and 2023 (so far), from scratch, with hledger, and it *still* took me less time and frustration than it likely would have taken to finish the last bits in GnuCash
Verdict: hledger has its quirks and issues, and I had to write my own MT940 importer, but it is orders of magnitude nicer to work with than the horror that is GnuCash

Loving the commentary on this thread on an external forum, insinuating that I "have no idea what I'm doing and what the consequences will be of posting things like this"
It's not as if I've spent the better part of the past 15 years deliberating the complexities of this topic, or anything like that
Nah, I'm not following the Respectable Viewpoint, so I must just be clueless!
diet culture, medical
all I'm saying is that if *I* were gonna write a horror-sci-fi short story about a new medication, for any purpose, it would definitely involve corporate M&A in the backstory somewhere
New study gave $7,500 to 50 unhoused people.
Guess what?
"They did not spend more money on alcohol or drugs, contrary to what people believe, and instead they spent the money on rent, food, housing, transit, furniture, a used car, clothes. It's entirely the opposite of what people think they're going to do with the money."
Congrats to my UBC colleague Jiaying Zhao on this study.
@foone in my home automation talk I mention how nice it is to have physical controls that operate many systems. Instead of fumbling with six apps, one satisfying chonky e-stop closes the blinds, turns off the lights, sets the thermostats, schedules the dishwasher, etc.
There's something neat about getting so adapted to a piece of machinery that you immediately notice if anything is off with it, whether it's the way an engine idles, a saw hums, or how the drivetrain of a bicycle feels as you pedal it. The human body didn't evolve to have its sense of self extended into non-living appendages, but it readily and willingly does so
re: subtoot
This is a pretty important meta-progressivism thing. Are you only willing to criticize the flaws that you see in others, or are you also willing to engage with the flaws pointed out about you?
Like, nobody is expecting you to be perfect. But if your view of progressivism is that you are always at the forefront of it, and that you can't be missing anything, then how do you expect anyone to trust you on the matter?
eff, abuse
"The cops and the courts should be working to protect the victims of KF and go after the perpetrators with every legal tool at their disposal." have you somehow not noticed that cops are too busy raiding the houses of their victims?

Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
