I think the latest Tom Scott video is a pretty big deal, in a positive way, for reasons entirely unrelated to the subject matter of the video.

Why? Because of the "under a system of capitalism, ..." clause here: youtu.be/_G2Q1qsoGEU?t=212

While it undoubtedly will not be *the* first case of this, it's the first time that I've seen a video on a channel that is not explicitly leftist, acknowledge that the circumstances are a result of capitalism, rather than something that Just Happens.

And I think this is a crucially important indicator for anti-capitalist progress: do people recognize *and acknowledge* the role that capitalism plays in their lives? Is this a thing that can just be mentioned as a passing remark when explaining something? Has it become normalized to call out the cause by its name?

And with this, the answer to that has come quite a bit closer to "yes".

Does anyone have a re-Markable eInk tablet? I just found out about them and they look amazing. I don't really need one, but if I could use it as an eBook reader I think I could justify the cost. Does anyone have any experience with it? Does it work well as an eBook reader? They say it supports both PDF and ePub formats, but if it doesn't have an app specifically for eBooks or if the UI is janky it might not be a good solution.

"google's security team released--" blah blah blah just stop there, google the corporation has long ago burned all of its social good will.

if you work at a google/facebook and want to be taken seriously, you need to work with community groups and publish things that way. dumping tablets from a mount isn't going to work anymore

This week a bicycle was in the way for a new episode of “random places where the sidewalk is opened for unannounced and unspecified construction work”.

There is a canonically non-binary trainer in Pokémon Gen 2 games! :D

For whoever needs to hear this: becoming a better programmer isn't about learning more tech or being more careful, it's about recognizing your human fallibility and developing approaches that account for it

Like, these people just construct entire bullshit narratives of complexity, to justify their own existence

Pet peeve: clickbaity websites that spread misinformation by desperately trying to convince you that each of the options is ideal for a different usecase, even when one is a straight upgrade over the other (or even a direct replacement), just so that they can present themselves as "your guide to understanding ______".

If you're writing about an issue that particularly impacts women and girls, please take a moment to consider if it would be more accurate to use language that includes all AFAB people, and not just women and girls.

@doot It's good advice because feature requests are always implemented in a timely fashion, never ignored and it takes no time and effort to create one, detail the exact behaviour you need from it and defend the idea against hostile project maintainers looking for any possible excuse to close it.

epidemic, genocide rambling

my spicy thought for the day is that that the hiv/aids epidemic was the canary for how late stage capitalism will treat the next epidemic. general uncaring and systemic attitudes of ignoring actual suffering and death to the point of genocide so that the show may go on.
this time, however, society is much more fractured in our ability to make a ruckus so that community health is taken seriously - resulting in a lot more uncaring and outright denial of the effects of #covid

I went to three in-person conferences this summer. All asked attendees to COVID test every other day.

The first "encouraged" masks, and had a COVID outbreak.

The second "encouraged" masks, and had 10 percent positivity by the second to last day, at which point they started requiring masks.

The third REQUIRED masks indoors, and had zero positive COVID tests.

i love downloading gigabytes of updates for no noticeable improvement

Question for people with gas stoves: does the electric igniter button on your stove work?

As an immunocompromised person, I do not attend large events often because...we are in a pandemic 🙃I have missed everyone so much, but it's such a huge risk to take. I wanted to highlight GeekGirlCon's 2023 Covid-19 policy here, as it was a major factor in my decision to be a guest this year. #Covid19 #GeekGirlCon

Seriously, this is not a "people can disagree about things" or "you should accept constructive criticism" thing. If you mock people for wearing PPE, getting vaccinated, or otherwise protecting themselves, the most charitable possible interpretation of your behavior is that you're an asshole. If you defend it, you're also an asshole. This is really simple.
