*Tankies Go Home!*

One of the interesting things about watching the remastered episodes of Robot Wars, is that you can see a lot more of the "TV magic" that made it look a lot more impressive than it really was.
Like how the 'drills' in season 1 absolutely never stood a chance to do any real damage, because they're slow-moving spirals mounted on a motor. But this probably would've looked much faster in low resolution!
Or how the 'circular saws' in many parts of the set are actually grinding discs; presumably this was more practical because they wouldn't get caught on stuff, and they would look like a fast-spinning blur on TV even if they were not.
And as a kid I always had this impression of the house robots being massively overpowered machines; but watching the remastered version, I strongly suspect they were deliberately designed to have weak spots so as to keep the spectacle going for longer 😅
i don't have the energy to field any questions along the line of "wait, what's going on?" - so here are some links that you can use to educate yourself. all of these were posted today, and discuss the events of the past... weeks? months? i don't know anymore.
but here ya go, have fun. and keep in mind that these posts were written by people i consider friends, so i won't be tolerating any posts criticizing them in this thread. take it somewhere else.

i'm a bit less on-edge now that things have settled down, so i've unlocked my account again. feel free to follow to see those posts, and no worries if you unfollow afterwards. /gen
there have also been some important posts made over the past week (has it really only been a week? oof). so i figured i might as well link those here too.
1️⃣ https://dotart.blog/welshpixie/the-toxic-manosphere-of-fedi (regardless of what you think of welshpixie, this is a must-read. some of the admins of the biggest fediverse instances are misogynistic as fuck, and the receipts are right there.)
2️⃣ https://oliphant.social/@AnarchoNinaWrites/110834569726464759 (if you dismissed welshpixie's post as "oversensitive" or "just fedi drama", that was a terrible judgment on your part, and you should read this post to understand why).
3️⃣ https://writer.oliphant.social/oliphant/an-update-on-universeodon-yes-still-defederating (this is a follow-up to the very first post i linked in this message - oliphant's "defederating universeodon" post. in this update, he illustrates the mental/emotional turmoil that comes along with being an instance admin who tries very hard to keep their community safe. he also points out the lingering damage from byron's abuse, and how it retraumatized many of us. ❤️🩹)

oh, and here's one more link that's useful in general. it's relevant to anyone who's reading this thread and wondering why i sound so angry and abrasive, and thinking that my message would be much easier to digest if it was conveyed more palatably. (fuck you, by the way.)

(honestly, even if you think you already understand tone-policing, i'd still recommend reading that. it's a really great article.)

this next bit is directed at the abuser himself. i'd mention his name, but we've seen how that usually plays out.
no wonder you feel lonely. no wonder you feel isolated. you've forgotten (or maybe never learned) what it means to truly connect with other people, to build meaningful relationships that just *are*. the only thing you lose by leaving is the potential to turn us into money-making machines for your own gain. you never sincerely tried to be a part of the community, so all of your complaints are just hot air.
i know how to handle people like you - people who don't know how to do anything but start screaming at the first hint of (constructive) criticism. people who have gone their whole lives without ever having truly been told "no" in a way that matters. people who think anyone who disagrees with them is "harassing" them. people who will throw even their closest friends under the bus if they think there's a tiny chance it would make them look good somehow.
i didn't talk you into a hole that you couldn't climb out of - you did. i just helped you along, agreeing with what you were saying and patting you on the back like you wanted. and you ate it up until you realized i wasn't going to let you derail the conversation like you always do. you realized i was holding you accountable for things you repeatedly promised, but couldn't provide. and you bailed.
a week later, for the first time, you were called out by someone whose privilege matched yours. you tried to play the same game with him, but he wasn't having it either. you asked him the same question you asked me - "where does it end?" - and when he pointed you to my unanswered thread, you probably realized there was no way out of the grave you had dug for yourself. and... you bailed.
we wanted you to see how much harm you were doing, apologize for it all, and step up to the task you signed up for. we wanted you to put in the work and *do better*. you owed that to the thousands of people who mistakenly placed their trust in you. for their sake, our ideal solution was never for you to leave - but we'll take it if that's the best you can do. at this point, it's strictly harm reduction. so be it.
🧵 4/6
🧵 for anyone who feels the need to wish an abuser well:
you're hurting us, but it isn't intentional.
innocent platitudes: "take care of yourself!" "hope you're okay!"
but not for those who sacrificed pieces of ourselves to protect our people from someone who tried to erase us.
and not for those who were the deliberate targets of his abuse.
nope, those platitudes - en masse - are always reserved for *the abuser himself*.
every single one is a slap in our faces:
"look what you made him do. no wonder he treated you that way."
"you look the same as always. he's obviously suffering more than usual."
"abuser? him? no way, that's you - look what you made him do."
you're hurting us, but *at least* it isn't intentional.
it was intentional when he hurt every single one of us, for personal gain, while you stood by and watched.
maybe you didn't even see the problem, because you assume that voices like his are reliable sources of truth.
and because you weren't personally affected, you could ignore our pain and remain as comfortable as ever.
maybe you did see our cries for help, but chalked it up to the regular background noise that's always there.
it *is* always there, and you do nothing. what does that say about you?
you're hurting us, and now you know it.
but *at least* we're used to it, because it's all we've ever known.
and we won't be erased.
does anyone have a broken Nintendo DSi or DSi XL lying around? (preferably in Europe for shipping reasons)
I need a few more consoles to do the following:
* sand/polish down each layer of the PCB and image them
* document all the testpoints on the DSi XL PCB (which are, unlike the regular DSi's, not properly labeled)
* document the last few remaining unknown pins of the CPU-TWL SoC
this is of course destructive, so that's why I don't want to do this with still-working consoles
Giving fascists “the benefit of the doubt” is how you end up living under fascism.
(Notice I said “living”. Funny how those who would be dead under it are never the ones doing this.)
I just heard, Chris Matthews, a political pundit/journalist use the term “marginal people” and it hit me why so many “good folx” in positions of power and privilege fail at efforts of “justice”
People are NOT “marginal”…they’ve been MARGINALIZED and that’s a big fuckin difference
The former incorrectly assigns “value” AND blame to folx and their effort, or lack of, while the latter, correctly acknowledges that these folx are acted upon by discriminatory systems, institutions, and policies
I am once again reminding everyone that covid home antigen testing became less reliable with the omicron variant, as announced in late 2021.
Serial testing is the updated recommendation if you don't have pcr test access. Test again after 48 hours from an initial negative result if symptomatic. Test at 48 and 96 hours after an initial negative if you have no symptoms but have had contact with anyone you know to be infected.

One of the creepier tech-related incidents I remember was many years ago when I wanted the Sam's Photofacts (a third-party creator of device specs and schematics, etc.) for a very old portable TV. Way out of date, but I was trying to help someone with it.
I mentioned to a friend that I was looking for old Photofacts, but I did not say anything about the TV. He scribbled an address on a scrap of paper, an address locally here in L.A. "Try him," he muttered.
I drive over. It's a small unmarked storefront. I go in, the bell on the door rings. Sitting inside, like the caterpillar in "Alice in Wonderland", is this little guy perched on a stool, with immense stacks of paper surrounding him everywhere. Total mayhem.
I walk up to him -- knowing that this was a waste of time and really wanting to get out of there -- and asked if he had the Sam's Photofacts for that specific very old TV model.
Without saying a word, he reached over to the pile of papers right next to him, took the TOP item off the pile, and silently handed it to me. It was the ancient one I needed. Stunned, I paid him the amount marked on the item, and left with it, not completely sure what had just happened.
When I drove by there a month later that storefront was something else entirely. He was gone.
