ugh

there's that "growth at all costs" mindset again

"think of how good this would be for the fediverse!"

the software's mass-adoption? sure thing, you're right, if that's really all you care about

but the people ON THE FUCKING FEDIVERSE ALREADY? the communities that exist here? nah, not by a long shot

Show thread

yes, actually

i think preemptively defederating from the news organization that routinely does extreme transphobia

is a preferable alternative to waiting until they start pushing that bullshit into peoples' feeds

because, at that point, the damage is done. someone's mental state is harmed. someone's day is ruined. someone might be pushed to harm themself, even

the constant transphobia in the news... it really starts to wear you down and get to you

even if that sorta stuff doesn't normally

The conundrum: all the hackercons are during the summer, so all the fun vulnerabilities are getting dropped, but all the hackercons are during the summer, so nobody's around to patch the affected systems

@joepie91

Also, if you or people you know and like are accused of racism, don't take it as an accusation of being a serial killer. Take a beat, take a breath, and take a moment to listen and possibly learn.

Assume that racism is so insidious in our society that it might sneak in on you without you noticing it at first. Being truly anti-racist means regularly checking yourself and your actions.

Hi other white folks, can you fucking *stop* splitting hairs over the evidence of racism when it is presented to you? If it's not obvious to you, you should take that as a sign that you have things to learn, not that the accusation is wrong.

Signed, someone who is very tired of it becoming difficult to track down the origins of accusations because of this fucking behaviour discouraging people from providing receipts in the first place. You're not just directly harming the victims this way, you're also making things much harder for everybody actually trying to work on the problem.

If an account has existed for a full three weeks posting absolutely heinous incel shit, bigotry, hate, abuse, harassment, ableism, etc. without anyone noticing and reporting it, your instance is TOO FUCKING BIG

I assume you get why it's not a nice thing to say that "slavery helped black people in some ways" but I think some people miss why this particular idea is *exceptionally* racist.

One of the main arguments to justify slavery was that it "civilized" black people by making us Christian & teaching us obedience to our "betters." Black people were "lucky" or "better off" as slaves.

It assumes that when people were enslaved they had no skills, nothing to offer, that they were basically animals.

"I'm looking for a FOSS alternative for this thing."
"Why not use CorpThing dot io? It's FOSS"
"That's run by a corporation."
"So what? Why does that matter? It's still FOSS."
"They should hand over the project to community governance then."
"That's unrealistic, they need to protect their business interests!"
"Exactly."

How do i get tram tickets for Luxembourg… oh wait you don’t 😅

See worryfree public transport that’s all we want… here I am lobbying for a one ticket for all Belgian transport while in some I don’t even need one! (Anyhow support my fight in unified ticketing…)

It is such a scam that companies pay you wages after the fact, while rentiers seek rent beforehand.

Wages should either be paid upfront, or rent should only be payable after services provided. The current state of things puts workers at a huge disadvantage.

Also, looking at Overture's data quality, yeah, I don't think that's getting imported into OpenStreetMap any time soon, if ever.

I have Questions about the journos breathlessly reporting on Overture's Places database as some sort of saviour of open-source mapping, without even bothering to mention OpenStreetMap in passing

Why are people calling #Overture places database “alpha quality”?

All the big Overture companies have been involved in #OpenStreetMap for *years*, some almost a **decade** (e.g. Facebook, Microsoft). You don't really believe that this is something they threw together in an afternoon, do you?

This is probably the best quality they could do! 🤣

(Maybe the OpenStreetMap approach is just better 😉😉)

I feel like someone must have done this terrible #linguistics joke before, but I've never actually seen it.
