What they're trying to sell to us is the idea that somehow, this technology just appeared on its own, and now we have to adjust to it. A notion of technology as an inevitable force of nature.

A large portion of the world's journalists are helping them pull the scam off by constantly writing about technology as if it just shows up and does things on its own. As if people weren't constantly making choices on how to develop and deploy it.

The whole "AI", i.e. content generator, spectacle is such a perfect example of why the idea that technology is neutral is such garbage.

There are so many damn things we could be doing with all this processing power and money, and what the people making the decisions are choosing to do is line their own pockets and destroy the livelihoods of the people they call "creatives". Stealing other people's work and repackaging it as computer-generated swill. The stupidity of it is infuriating.

A reminder for fellow white people how racism operates in our white moderate circles

Your racist friend is not going to be racist in a way they think you will call them out on. They will phrase things in a way they feel has deniability
This means you won't see your friends being obviously racist
If you want to understand racism you need to listen to those affected (though demanding that people affected by racism always explain themselves is also a racist action. sit down, shut up, and listen)
And if you expect it to be obvious to you when white people are being racist you will end up covering for racists

Outlook was suspiciously happy to accept e-mail from my entirely unknown server with zero SPF or DMARC records

possibly spicy take, Twitter migration meta

@joepie91 and Eugen ‘Growth’ Gargron, whose ego is entangled with making mastodon (well, mostly just m.s) bigger forever, was exactly the sort of wannabe CEO tech ‘entrepreneur’ type that the media were salivating for, regardless that fedi doesn’t actually work that way.

me using "iirc" everywhere because i'm like 99% sure i'm correct but don't trust my own brain enough to actually remember things accurately

It's always amusing how people say my views on moderation and federation create an ideological bubble.

Bro, have you seen my timeline on a daily basis?

I talk to
amazing people from all over the planet from every kind of identity, sexuality, and ethnic background you can imagine.

I have compelling convos with so many people who do not think like me regularly that I've just gotten used to having my worldview in constant flux.

If being in bubble means being part of an international community of brilliant, weird, engaging, and beautiful people from any identity one can conjure and some you can't, ha, then yes, I'm in a bubble.

It's fun here.

The whole "You can build up your tolerance to heat by suffering high heat continuously"

Is not only extremely dangerous advice, it's also very abelist advice that borders on the eugenics idea that "It's fine because most people will be fine".

There are a lot of people that can't live in elevated temperatures, they won't adapt, they will die.

Sure we're going into uncharted hot territory, but we don't need to pretend that it'll be good, helpful, or adaptable for everyone.

I am begging you to wave your pride flags today. Wave them every day. Get one to put up outside your estate and never take it down. Visibility isn't for a day or a month or a special occasion, it's all the time, and it's always important.

Make the folks that hate us more scared than we are.

the capacity of human brain honestly amazes me. i am only 19 and i already know SO MUCH and even that amount is not enough for me to be a specialist in any field yet. there are so many things in this universe and on this earth omg

"AI is going to take your job!"

Like hell it is. Try:

"A super-rich capitalist has invested billions of dollars into replacing human creative work with a shitty computer program, so he can pocket more of the profits."

When you stop intentionally obscuring who is doing things and who is benefiting from them, the world starts looking very different indeed.

.art: We're blocking X, we don't feel very safe federating with them
People: ?? They're not that bad
X: *explodes in a seething fireball of gross reactionary rage*
People: oh damn

(Not X as in Twitter, btw. X as in random instances we've blocked.)

⚠️ Exploit in multiple #Minecraft Forge mods

Kainoa/ThatOneCalculator vs. mastodon.art meta, shitposting, racist harassment, us politics

Last year, a couple things happened relevant to the current discussion.

In July, a report was forwarded from Weirder Earth to stop.voring.me, Kainoa's instance, about a Donald Trump parody account. Over the course of about a day as the Weirder Earth mod team discussed action, Kainoa:

- reached out to talk about the report,
- did not get an immediate reply (because we were still deliberating), and
- declared (coincidentally, in a reply to Eris of disqordia.space) that Weirder Earth had called stop.voring.me "right-wing". stop.voring.me/notes/92f5dvsfu

To be explicit: at this point, there was one report and zero mod statements from w.e, and the report said nothing about wings. This public statement by Kainoa was straight-up false.

At the time, we sent an email back and let this go.

And then in August, Kainoa joined in Eris's thread maligning ubuntu.buzz, a Black-centric instance, for blocking racists: akko.disqordia.space/notice/AM

I have never been so personally called out by a meme in my fucking life.

I've seen latest Dell XPS keyboard today, and it hurts on multiple levels.
