Folks, the reason #Facebook/ #Instagram/ #Meta/ Zuckerberg hasn’t launched #Threads in the #EU isn’t because the EU is determined to protect your privacy, it’s because the EU is determined to protect The Single Market (peace be upon it) from anticompetitive behaviour. It’s because they’re using Instagram to launch Threads and sharing data between them (and not with EU startups that might want to use that data too). It’s #antitrust, not #privacy. It’s markets, not people.

also these shenanigans go WAY beyond simply wanting to get past filters or screw up search results, dude's trying to bend language itself to his will.

He's trying to make it so you can't sew or look at any website with threaded conversations without thinking about his depressing place. He's trying to make it so you can't encounter the word "meta" without thinking of his crap worksona-on-main VR effort. This goes beyond searching or filters or even the internet, it's gonna leech into the real world. He's trying to do to these words what other very bad men have done to the OK symbol or Charlie Chaplin's moustache.

Don't believe me? Look at that thing on his head. That's on purpose, he's modelling himself after a Roman emperor. Look at that and tell me he'd be satisfied once he'd bollocksed up a couple search terms.

Don't just shrug and hand facebook the word "threads" like it's his now. Make him spend some money on it at least, damn.

A while ago, someone shared quite a nice graphic of the different fediverse platforms, which ones spoke to which, and the sorts of content each was geared towards.

My own search-fu has failed me, I don't suppose anyone can point me towards it?

I'm looking for somewhere I can post slightly longer form things than Masto, but not as long as my full blog.

I suspect quite a few of you might be keen on open-source 😀

Unfortunately, #opensource has a funding problem, and so a lot of people struggle to find time to commit to their projects.

In many regions though (esp the EU) there is money available to fund you doing open source full time! Particularly in a few different areas related to what the EU is calling "Next Generation Internet" (#NGI) tech.

All these are open for applicants either right now or imminently:

Though still controversial, new #EU laws that escalate border violence are under serious consideration by the so called 'left-wing' parties in the government of #Germany.

These policies would seriously undermine the rights of #refugees and basically open the door for imprisoning them.

Be in solidarity with people fleeing war and poverty, even if society at large is determined to let them suffer.

An infamous transphobic campaigner is on Facebook's new Threads site. Many masto/fedi admits are “wait & see”-ing. If this stays up, that should tell us everythign we need to know about FB's/Thread's moderation policies.

First real-world dlayer module successfully implemented \o/

The LVM part of my 'system query API' project now lives in its own separate module, and works!

Disclaimer: I have no insider knowledge here and am just explaining the situation as I understand it from my own research

First some background. In late 2020 Red Hat effectively killed CentOS, which was a free to use version of RHEL that started as an independent project but was adopted by Red Hat in 2014. CentOS was useful because it had full compatibility with RHEL, so a user wishing to run software that targeted a specific RHEL version knew that software would work as intended on the equivalent free CentOS version.

To fill the gap left by CentOS, several projects popped up in the intervening years to produce an equivalent product. The two main ones being Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux. These new distros operated by downloading the freely available RHEL source code, patching out any Red Hat branding, building the packages and ISOs, and distributing them. All of which they are entitled to do under the terms of the GPL.

What has changed in the past couple of weeks is Red Hat has decided to stop freely providing their sources to everyone, and instead only provide them to paying customers. This is explicitly allowed under the GPL, and if that was the extent of what they did this would be a non-story. What is notable is that they have also adopted a policy that any RHEL custom caught "leaking" source code will have their support contract terminated and will no longer receive updates. This also does not violate the letter of the GPL but very much violates the spirit of the GPL. Red Hat has justified this decision stating that releasing source as they had been "no longer provides value to the company".

What the ultimate effect of this change will be is yet to be seen. Rocky and Alma say they have plans to continue to operate, acquiring RHEL source through alternative methods.

Personally, I see this as one more reason to not use or depend on corporate backed software and instead prefer community run projects.
