And I really hate it when people do this, because it ends up demotivating a lot of people from even trying - they just *believe* these absolutist statements, and now it definitely won't be possible because nobody even attempts it anymore
That's not to say that there aren't things that are *literally* impossible, of course. But like, you do at least need to be able to explain *why* it is impossible, what the fundamental barrier is? And not just assume it based on observed results?
Something that continues to baffle me is how many people will draw conclusions about whether something is *possible*, purely based on whether it has succeeded so far - without any attempt at understanding *why* something has succeeded or failed before, and whether that might be possible to change by changing the circumstances.
And like, this is not just a neurotypical thing. I see plenty of ND folks do this just as much. And the conclusions are always super absolutist - not "I don't see how to make this work", but straight-up "this is clearly not possible at all".

Obviously, be careful and do your research as a White person offering a leg up and a POC person receiving that leg up in the business world.
But when a White person, especially a White person in power vouches for you in the business world, I've found all of a sudden doors fly open for you.

But offer to mentor a POC/Black. Offer to review a resume. Offer to put in a word for them. Mention their name and their work.

What if any resource under `/.well-known/permissive-cors/` automatically had maximally permissive CORS policy, by default? Would save sooooo much roundtrip latency on preflight checks.

I think that companies like meta building fediverse compatible services is an existential threat to this network and the first step in Embrace, Extend, Extinguish.

So, what's the latest on the Reddit shitshow?
It occurs to me that fedi seems to be the only place where I can actually get answers to my weird-ass niche technical questions
So yesterday I was writing some code that talks to fedi servers, and I entered foo @ baz.bar as a test ID and what the hell, turns out that domain not only exists but also is running an actual Mastodon instance
Guess I should've listened to the "use example.com for testing" thing
Browser extension development question: is it still possible (including in Chrome!) to intercept response headers of all HTTP requests?
Don't need to modify them or anything, but I have an idea for an extension that identifies 'compatible' sites by a server-provided response header (to avoid having to inject any code into the page).
The header name is known upfront (and is a custom header), but it should be intercepted for every pageload that is visible to the user, regardless of domain.

It's worth thinking about a social media site like a physical space for a lot of reasons, but *especially* when we're talking about federated, community run solutions.
Your club has to pay its bills, but if you all get together in the basement of the local gym or whatever, it's going to be a lot less expensive than building a brand new building out the gate. By analogy, a small community can get by with existing software and a shared VPS, rather than going full steam ahead with custom software, an enterprise CDN, and a fully replicated database server.
A professional nightclub needs a bouncer on payroll, but your D&D group probably doesn't - and if you run a big D&D event, you can ask for an entry fee or just rotate among whoever is willing. By analogy, an open-registration, infinite-growth social media site needs to pay its mods a living wage immediately, but a small Fediverse server can start out (and likely stay) a hobby project that pays a small amount or rotates moderation duties. (Better mod tools would help, though!)
Your poker night isn't financed by debt; a casino probably is.
You'd expect the public library to be there in ten years, but you might not have the same expectations of your neighbor's Little Free Library.
And so forth.
