My first job was at a fast food joint. It made so much food daily, and I would give out a lot of it to people I knew because I knew it didn't matter.

Some homeless people would come by occasionally close to closing, and I would take their order because we would throw it out anyway.
The manager of the place saw me doing it one night and got really upset because he said it was against company policy and someone might sue. Every single employee laughed because this *does not happen.* He got pissy and wrote me up and said I wouldn't be put on the schedule anymore.

Ha, before you ask, yes, he was.

The moral is there is more than enough food in this fucking country. It is absolutely absurd anyone is going hungry, and people are going hungry because there is a policy that makes those conditions.

That was one of first the moments I realized how fucked up this country was. Letting people go hungry is completely nonsensical and purely about cruelty.

New day, new privileged dude polluting the FediBlock tag with "actually defederation is bad" bullshit

I am once again having to explain to someone that the claims about "X is spyware" and "X is a backdoor" that are bandied around by hyperbolic 'privacy enthusiasts' do not in fact mean what they fear it means

Can the 'privacy community' please stop fucking doing this shit, thank you, I am tired of having to mop up your mess

Is the EDM scene ever going to fix its misogyny problem...?

Every now and then, I think about the most casually accidentally racist line I've read in a book. It was wholly unintentional, the sort of line that reveals the author spends Zero Time whatsoever around anybody darker than what you'd expect from southeast Asia.

The line was something like "and she had blue eyes, like all babies." It was the most bizarre thing I'd ever seen, because, well, Black babies' eyes are not blue at birth. Most mixed babies don't have blue eyes either. #BlackMastodon

when the adhdmancer adept is able to precisely balance two equidisinteresting tasks, they may set up a standing wave of procrastinative oscillation between them which successfully consumes both while generating mana for future spells

Here's my plan. Confiscate the assets of everyone with a net worth over a billion dollars to bring them down to a billion dollars. If they complain, bring them down to a million dollars. If they complain again ...

Well if it isn't cryptocurrency spam coming from the biggest, open instance on the #Fediverse. 👀

I wonder if this is at all related to challenges with moderating an instance of *checks notes* 200k active accounts? Or with moderating new accounts on the only instance actively promoted in the official apps? :thinking_rotate:

Thankfully we can always defederate! What's that? It's the biggest instance so there are real concerns about a lot of people losing connections? Whodda thunk it!

fedi meta

The size of mastodon.social is breaking the moderation story of the #Fediverse.

Moderation on fedi relies on:

1. instance admins and moderators being able to manage bad actors on their own instance;

2. instance admins being able to silence or defederate from insufficiently moderated instances.

Mastodon.social's size and the speed new accounts are set up there means that 1. is very difficult. The size of m.s. and the clout of some of its users means 2. is a hard decision.

whenever someone advocates for using the Brave browser, I quickly jot down a note to myself saying "don't listen to anything this person has to say ever again"

Looks like gfycat's dead, their TLS certificate expired 3 days ago and clearly nobody is monitoring their infrastructure anymore...

I guess that shows how 'good' of a steward Snapchat is

After recapping a dead Macintosh SE/30 at the #HomeComputerMuseum, we switched it on to see if our work had made any improvements. We were greeted with this startup screen.

It's #WorldBeeDay! I love bees, especially bumble bees. I worked for a beekeeper for one full year, so I got to do every seasonal activity of beekeeping. Each time I witnessed bees emerging from the hive, I cheered them on: "Go bees, go!"
Yes, I am a nerd for nature.

Stop using pesticides and rip out that environmental abomination you call a lawn. This photo of a Vosnesensky Bumble bee is from my lawn-free yard.

Folks running GoToSocial on single-board computers: how's it going? How's performance been? Any issues? Are you running with a connected USB hard drive, or just with on-board storage? Curious to hear about it :under_construction:

If you use KeePass 2.x (NOT KeePassXC or KeePass 1.x) then your master password has been leaked into your RAM in cleartext - the fix won't be released until June, but you can get an unstable experimental build with a fix right now, or you can uninstall keepass and move to KeePassXC: pcworld.com/article/1923963/an

Like, regl is *really* cool, and it would allow so many novel experimental things if more people knew of its existence and wrote tutorials about it

I wish regl would get some more love, rather than everybody's focus on three.js (which has a pretty questionable architecture and is really difficult to extend for experimental stuff)
