cis people: you are on our turf.

Tip for the day:

Any email from a colleague that you don’t like the contents of, simply reply with “unsubscribe”. It’s comically passive aggressive.

You know the saying about how a specialist doesn't get paid for putting an X somewhere, but for being the one to know *where* to put the X, with all the learning that that entails?

It works the same way for responsibility. "They can't be held responsible because someone else could have built the same harmful thing" is a bad excuse - because it's not about building the thing, it's about being the one to use your expertise for it.

We have a mop with a plastic head that covers the mop bit when it's not in use, and it broke recently, so now the mop is leaning against the washing machine with the rope bits hanging down loose and kinda parted so they look like hair around a face, and one of our cats has taken to sitting on the washing machine meowing plaintively at the mop as if wondering why it's not giving him any head pats

asking on behalf of someone: what's a good server/community on Mastodon for non-techie people of color who want a timeline that isn't just a bunch of white techies talking tech?

My mastodon circle is depressingly white, so I'm having a hard time answering that :(

Boosts welcome!

Google’s ghost workers make less than $15/hr and can’t work more than 29 hrs/wk, as 30 hrs worked would mean health and other benefits. npr.org/2023/03/31/1167246714/

"I've always felt like I don't fit," the young woman said.
"Fit where?" the witch said.
"In..." The young person gestured at their whole body. "Can you ..?"
"I can't make you fit what you have. I can make what you have fit you."
"Really?"
"It worked for me."
The young man smiled.

health update, +

This doesn't mean much for my kidneys, but it's positive nevertheless: my vision (likely affected by blood pressure) has been improving again! My left eye no longer has a tilt-shift effect

tdov request for cis people: find a transphobe socially nearby you and have a long hard conversation with them.

#TDoV remember trans men and non-binary folks as they get too little visibility. Most public attention (mostly the negative) is directed at trans women. Trans men and trans boys are erased most of the time, misgendered even more. Both groups are taken less serious by the general public.

I don't know what hurts more - being painted as a super villain or your identity coopted and warped and maliciously misconstrued as something you need to be saved from by your enemies.

I stand with my #TransMasc and #NonBinary siblings.

Cis allies: please remember us all when you talk about trans rights with others.

writing fanfiction about scientific papers on a site called "arXiv of our own",,

i love "i18n" as short for "internationalization" because nothing telegraphs "we consider this a burden and dont really care about it" like "i cant be fucked to type out all the letters"

pov you're checking out a dubious instance you're about to defederate

re: corpo instance subtoot

It's always so, so easy to tell who has ever actually run a community thing vs. who's stuck in startup brain mode

corpo instance subtoot

"We're using AWS and running an instance is costing us lots of money! How can that be?!"

The amount of anger I have towards Cloudflare hosting sites which are used to spread Lockbit and doing perfectly nothing about it is immense.

Not only does Cloudflare effectively act as a single point of failure for the whole Internet, they are also a single point of malice.
