For context, this was a magazine series where a new issue came out every 14 days, and each issue included a component of a robot; you'd end up building it over time. It could be controlled manually, or follow lines / detect obstacles.

Horrendously expensive in the end, but very very cool nevertheless.

Oh man, I was just reminded of the Real Robots magazine series, and that's a bit of a throwback

they always say that helping the poor or making healthcare free is unprofitable, but like, i don't care. if you designed such a system where money is more important than human lives (and any life in general), it's a shitty, immoral system by default and needs to be changed or abandoned ASAP. and if you support it, that says more about you than it ever could say anything about me.

most unions in klanada are affiliates (members) of the CLC. some of these unions openly include cops & their support staff. for example:

Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE). “The RCMP hires civilian employees in a wide variety of disciplines to support our police officers at the detachment, provincial and federal levels. From administrative support to scientists in the laboratories to telecommunications officers answering 911 calls, these employees play a critical role”
Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). “CUPE also represents close to 5,600 employees in fire and police operations, including approximately 1,000 administrative and dispatch employees in Quebec and several hundred more in British Columbia. … Some police officers, firefighters, and correctional officers are CUPE members in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. CUPE 104 represents 1,200 RCMP communication specialists across Canada… Finally, several hundred members in Quebec work in the field of secure transportation.”
National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE). “Among the public sector members of the National Union are thousands of women and men who work in Canada’s justice system. These include Youth Corrections Professionals, Correctional Officers, Probation Officers, Sheriffs, as well as those who work in community-based social services, child protection, youth counsellors and other related social services.”

rant, political, about "being nice" to ignorant people

I've been existing on this globe for 30+ years now, and frankly I have well run out of patience for oppression apologia.

But perhaps the worst part of this is when people tell me "you should be nicer about it, maybe they just don't know about the problem, you catch flies with honey and not with vinegar"

Like, why does this automatically become *my* burden to bear? Why am *I*, as an already marginalized and exhausted person, expected to accommodate people's ignorance to these topics, without any similar expectations being placed on the other person who has been passively enabling said oppression?

Like, don't get me wrong, I already put a lot of time and energy into educating people about oppression, by my own choice. I recognize the society-level need of such work. But if you *demand* from me that I do that, then fucking hell, you really need to think about your own privilege.

How about you do that work *yourself* if you think it's so fucking important that you're entitled to rake me over the coals if I'm not perfectly polite 100% of the time I talk about systemic oppression?

Instead of demanding that I yet again spend my precious little remaining energy in life on handholding someone who has made zero effort to introspect critically on their own role in society. :boosts_ok_gay:

This is sorta-kinda parallel to the "paradox of tolerance" stuff that the same people also refuse to understand

In order to have an open Fediverse

We gotta be closed to the people who are trying to absorb it and then close it off

classist bs

" I travel the length and breadth of the UK in first class and the decline in service over the last decade has been astonishing [...] frequently inhabited by people who clearly have not got a first class ticket yet you rarely see them removed, etc etc. [...] If I was paying for my own ticket there is no way I would travel first class."

Classist brain sure is something else

Weird times that I gotta tell this to people on Fedi

But Facebook is not coming to Fedi because they want to administer a good, responsible, instance that regards other well-run instances as peers and equals, and has policies that aim to respect the autonomy and values of its users and other instance's users right?

Facebook has ulterior motives

You know that, right?

Please tell me you that I don't have to convince you of that

us pol demographics kinda

anybody have any (packaged, linkable) references on the “liberals exist in liberal bubbles while conservatives are used to dealing with people who think differently from them” trope? whether or not scoped to “among the youths”.

i keep running into claims that seems wildly implausible from my own anecdotal experience / regional knowledge, but….
