the 2010s was great because you'd open the box for a new smoke detector and find a leaflet asking you to register your detector and to join the manufacturer's forum

Agh it's been five years since my last big wire order, I'm running out of wire, and the dude who sold me wire ain't selling wire no more.

And there's a whole load of crappy floppy wire out there! Folks, who's your go-to for decent quality copper wire at fair prices? Need some 22, 20 and 18-gauge stuff in maybe half a dozen colours. Boosts for visibility welcome.

cool astronomy event happening in an hour and the stream to watch it on

In half an hour we’re going to start our stream at Griffith Observatory for the Moon covering up Mars from our view here on Earth tonight. This is an astronomical event called an occultation. That actual occultation will start about one hour from now. Watch it live here: youtu.be/R3hRKCZAJdc

D-does catcatnya.com meow everytime I get a notification??
I love it.

CW's and mention of phobia

I really, really appreciate content warnings and the people who use them.

I have emetophobia and sometimes seeing food, for instance, when I'm not expecting it can trigger me a bit. It's nice to be able to choose whether or not that content is right for me at this moment.

Thank you, Mastodon, for making the Fediverse that much safer for people like me!

I'm a victim of Laurelai and I think it's time I speak up

So I mentioned this in a thread but I think it's time for a standalone post!

Side note: if you're gonna take Laurelai's side on this, go ahead, believe all her bullshit and leave me the fuck alone. I know what happened and I have witnesses IRL.

somehow I was completely unaware of the fact that France has active colonial territories to this day that are literally considered part of the country??? like it's not as if something like that would just have slipped my memory, I have NEVER heard of this wtf (which speaks a lot to our education, and also to how this is completely swept under the rug politically within the EU?? oh yeah there are these parts of whole other continents that are technically EU but we do not talk about those :)))

Hey Mastodon Admins,
I have troubles finding accounts on my instance,
e.g. searching for "admin" yields no results, but searching for "admin@fediver.de" yields 1 result.

Is it supposed to work that way? If (hopefully) not: any starting point how to debug this? the mastodon-sidekiq logs doen't seem to be helpful.

why are so many so focused on horizontally scaling gotosocial. giant instances just takes away from the benefits of federation lmao

go take your enterprise philosophy horizontal scaling architecture of nightmares and too many abstractions away from here

intentionally misusing the RAADS-R autism test

Got a high score on the autism test!!!

(I just answered instinctively based on what I thought would get the highest score. I'm very good at tests)

lol the maximum score in the original paper was 227

"Free speech" is a good principle for governments (though one whose details include serious problems that need to be considered), not for moderating communities.

This seems like a good moment to remind everybody that when someone seems *weirdly* intent on introducing strict legalistic procedures for moderation, and they are not a literal nation state, they're *probably* trying to ensure that their bigoted friends have wiggle room to fly under the radar

@joepie91 Third parties can't really offer this easily as vendors (airlines etc) tend to offer 3 types of product: single, retour and openjaw(a->b->c). As prices vary continuously you cannot safely sell 2 products simultaneously, as that kind of batching is also not supported (pricing holds are per product and short lived).

all i'm saying is, if they can add types to python, then i should be able to remove types from java. it's only fair

Students respond better to feedback when it's depersonalized.

Personal: Your wording here is unclear
Impersonal: The wording here is unclear.

Personal: Your organization is confusing.
Impersonal: The organization is confusing.

Personal: You made the opposite claim in the previous paragraph.
Impersonal: The previous paragraph made the opposite claim.

I've found that this makes a massive difference, giving students the detachment they need to focus on their writing.

One of the interesting things, as we begin to test out the federated model of social media at scale, is that having a rule of “I don’t have to put up with any dipshits” is getting a lot of pushback from the dipshits.

honestly if you need a whole 'council' with members and a process to try to convince people online that you're not a shit head, you are probably a shit head

jokes aside, the fact that these knobheads get so mad about defederation kinda suggests to me that defederation works quite well to isolate and disempower them, so that's nice
