"It was my belief that as Mastodon adoption grew, the moderators of whichever instance you chose to use would have to deal ever-increasing volumes of abuse. It’d be like how email providers have to develop spam filters to combat incoming spam from every other provider (but so much still gets through).

After a month on #Mastodon, I’ve realized I was wrong."

politics-adjacent, infrastructure

A (paraphrased) description by someone I know, of the "fallacy of the factory", which describes a serious risk of centralized manufacturing:

You build a factory to manufacture something that people need. That requires a big investment, that the factory now needs to make back in some way, but the legitimate need isn't big enough to do so.

So now the manufacturer starts inducing demand, by lobbying, advertising the product, whatever is necessary to make back that investment. Eventually the demand exceeds production capacity, and the factory needs to expand, again requiring significant investment - plus surrounding infrastructure *also* needs to expand.

This cycle repeats until your small "factory with a legitimate purpose" has turned into a self-serving sprawling system that keeps expanding unsustainably, regardless of what exact economic system it exists under.

So I've been told that the QOTO admin is also planning to sue Eugen over their removal from joinmastodon.org (presumably over the toot about the reason for their removal specifically). I do not have further context to confirm the details here, but here is the receipt.

composite video is so funny like let’s do 480i 30fps video over one cable and then use two for audio just cuz

hellsite

I'm starting to feel really skeeved out by companies, government services, and nonprofits that maintain Twitter presences but nothing on the fediverse. That means an endorsement of COVID denialism, white supremacy, transphobic violence, and other right-wing causes, all at an institutional level.

Hello I am going to repeat for the hundredth time that I used to love technology but now I spend more time complaining about technology.

the "danger of a filter bubble" is that you might, through tremendous effort, construct a useful, readable and enjoyable incoming flow without turds bobbling in it

this idea is strongly objected to by the turds

You’ll note that all of the discourse around Mastodon and Fediverse adoption now is about it “challenging” or “taking over” from Twitter.

This is yet another instance of pop culture taking over the discourse. Pop culture has to have a winner. It’s always a competition. Improvement or serving the end user is always secondary to winning out in a popularity contest.

Be extremely skeptical of any advice that is framed by the pop culture leaderboard. It’s likely to be toxic in the long run.

"The fediverse needs critical mass to survive!"

I've been here since 2017. Sometimes it's been a quiet place. Sometimes it's fast-paced. But it's had enough critical mass for survival for a long while.

Now what it needs it to become a _better_ place, not bigger.

Safer, nicer, friendlier, more welcoming to those at risk. A hasty push for more "critical mass" is likely to make these communities more aggressive, less forgiving, and less sustainable in the long term.

The people in the neighborhood wanted a bridge over the creek. The city had no funding for #PedestrianInfrastructure for something like that. But they did get an #art grant, so they hired an artist to create an art installation that would span the creek that people could walk on. I frequently walk my dogs along this creek and yes, over the bridge sometimes.

the reason you don't talk to fascists is because You Are Not Immune To Propaganda

@starfall additional two cents from someone that used to hang out with fascists: you might Think you're Immune To Propaganda. you'll sit in two spaces, and know that you say slurs to fit in with one crowd and know to never say them around the other crowd. you'll know How It Works and think nothing they say is actually slipping into what you think and do

and then you'll spend a disproportionate amount of time later after the fact, untangling a lot of shit you were told that you didn't attribute to a group you knew not to trust, that you didn't know was a dogwhistle, that you thought was Just A Meme but was actually a weird channer way of doing a stereotype joke

(and to a hypothetical reader, if you're one of these ex-channer/ex-cryptofash/ex-all-my-friends-were-nazis-at-one-point-and-i-haven't-examined-that types, this is a starting point for a lot of work ahead of you.)

the reason you don't talk to fascists is because You Are Not Immune To Propaganda

if i had a functional blog i would be writing a longer post about this, so here's the short version

people who share privileges can and should apply social pressure against bigotry as a one-off thing - i'm thinking of a study of the effectiveness of calling people on their shit while having a cis white guy pfp vs. not

but you will find yourself changing at least as much as the people you hang out with on a regular basis. they won't change at all if you don't have real social ties for them to give a shit about you challenging them on things

if i'm finding casual ableism creeping into my vocabulary from hanging out with my anticapitalist but not explicitly leftist gamer buddies, what more would hanging out with fascists do to warp my norms

"Why are so many more kids trans now?"

@SleepyCatten Some people are "worried" because it looks like more and more kids are becoming trans and/or non-binary nowadays. But the simple answer is: it used to be much more repressed. The same thing happened when schools stopped forcing kids to write with their right hand. "Suddenly" more and more kids were lefthanded. But eventually it hit a plateau at 9-10%. It's not that there weren't any lefthanded kids before - they were forced into invisibility.

I want to make a test on the % reach a post can have in terms of people in other servers. Are you seeing this post on mastodon.gamedev.place or another server? (Appreciate if you can boost this).

emigration advice, please boost

I’m looking to leave my country (Italy, i live approximately in the middle), my current target is germany, currently the main issue for me is figuring out how I’m supposed to move my stuff from here to there, as moving companies from anywhere i know are extremely shady and usually mishandle things, the amount of stuff i need to move isn’t too large (it’s mostly a subset of the contents of 1 room), probably would fit in a regular car. Does anyone know what sort of service I could use as an alternate
