@kriskowal Ah, oops, I was only thinking of the ^Z and fg part, not the `say` part 😅

I think probably the closest `say` equivalent on Linux would be `espeak-ng`? That does usually require separate installation. Or alternatively `notify-send` for displaying a notification (which I believe is preinstalled on a lot of distros).

@kriskowal This should also work the same on a typical Linux terminal, I believe?

MacOS Command Line Tip>

If you kicked off a job and it turns out it’s going to take a lot longer than you thought, and you don’t want to throw away your progress:

^Z
$ fg; say done

This will pause your program, then resume it, but this time you’ll get an audible notification when it completes. Unblock thyself.

The semicolon is important because it’s analogous to a finally block. You’ll get a notification for either success or failure. You can also && say yay || say oh no.

@rek Yep. Guy left an absolute garbage fire of a government behind, and is now doing the exact same "wreck things with a smile" shit in NATO.

Just about every part of government and society here is in crisis right now, and most of it can be traced back directly to him.

@rek That idiom is commonly applied here to Mark Rutte in particular, former prime minister of the Netherlands, since nothing seemed to stick to him despite his many failures, fuckups, and harmful policies

There’s more to #Ottawa than manicured lawns and pretty petals.

Thanks to multiple grassroots efforts, Ottawa’s bountiful greenery is getting more sustainable as #rewilding efforts are on the rise. Here are four projects that deserve attention and support.

Am I imagining things or did PayPal's fee for sending private transactions increase *significantly* recently?

If you think "some people will always want to exploit each other" is an argument against anarchism, why is your immediate solution to give those who exploit others power?

I don't really understand the idea behind needing to call congresspeople to get them to do something like reject a budget proposal. Sure it might make some sense for things where they would not be forced to do it otherwise, but surely they are not weighing the number of phone calls against their reelection chances - people don't have political memories like that. It feels like Tinkerbell logic along with removing their culpability for decisions: they would have done the thing you wanted but not enough people believed in them.

If you're a "call my congresspeople" kind of person, no beef with you, not my kind of tactic but I'm not trying to discourage you. Just seeing appeals like "this dem Rep says everyone needs to call their senator or else they will cave!" is like "or they could have a strategy beyond theater"

Edit: to be super clear, this is not me saying "don't call your congresspeople" - I basically share asta's sentiment that the amount of labor required to do it is very low for most people, so any nonzero effectiveness makes it probably worth doing in some circumstances.

Gaff tape is an essential part of theater tech shenanigans. A social gaffe is an awkward interpersonal mistake.

Felt like a fun twist on the phrase, as someone who likes to bring people together through theater. (Who is also neurodivergent enough to sometimes make some major missteps in social settings)

It's the Dutch word for 'yippee', followed by my year of birth. Picked it as a kid when I first used the web, and never saw a good reason to change it.

Contrary to popular belief, it has nothing to do with being called Joe or liking pie!

@ytvwld@chaos.social Most of them, really. I'm not saying they are *good* clients by a particular value judgment, to be clear, just that they are *viable* - there is a pretty wide variety of client usage, showing that all of these clients are considered to be good enough by the XMPP userbase to be used in practice.

Whereas in Matrix, other client options technically exist, but "people who are not using Element or a fork thereof" are a rounding error, and even people using other clients usually still run Element on the side.

NixOS, technically a subtoot but it's about all complaints of this kind (2)

This is of course separate from the usual "something is configured different on this distro and so something else doesn't work out of the box", but *that* part is in no way specific to NixOS.

NixOS, technically a subtoot but it's about all complaints of this kind

Sure, NixOS is 'unlike anything else', but only in a few very specific ways (namely the filesystem structure and mutability of system files) and while you could see that as being "difficult to make things work on", another way to see it is that it catches a lot of wrong assumptions for you early. Kind of like the Rust compiler.

Both filesystem structure and mutability of system files are things you should really not be assuming in the first place. Not just for the sake of NixOS, but also for the sake of many other configurations that are much more difficult to test against (because eg. they are embedded systems that only run on specific hardware).

See also: how DaVinci Resolve insists on living in a very specific filesystem path and how that causes trouble on *any* distro that isn't one of the officially supported ones.
