US pol: I was tricked on facebook in 2016
In 2016 I was active on facebook. I participated in a lot of political discussions and groups. And I was totally taken in hook line and sinker by right wing trolls posing as the left spreading rumors about HRC.
I'm being open about how I was tricked because I think of myself as pretty sharp. I hope at least some of you don't think of me as a dummy. It can work on anyone.
It can work on you. If you think it can't? That just makes you more vulnerable.

🦾until we have technical fixes for this sort of malicious domain spam, I think we all need to make an extra effort to report malicious instances proactively to aid admins, who are overwhelmed keeping up.
But there definitely should be technical solutions.
Also: stop telling people dealing with these problems that they are solveable with mastodon as is. It’s not that there aren’t ways to deal with malicious instances or bad faith actors, it’s that the volume of malicious instances and bad faith actors is too high for the current solutions to handle.

🦾we need technical solutions, but we also need to change the culture of passivity here.
As many people on here are all too quick to point out, there are some existing tools to mitigate this. Blocking. Reporting them to your admin. Defederation. I’m sure yall can think of others.
The more of us doing those things, the safer the fediverse is. You do not need to be a programmer or admin to report malicious instances. It should not all be on black users to fight this alone. Or on any other marginalized group. If it is, they will pick us off one by one.
We outnumber the fascists, in the end, and every time they have to get a new domain to evade our blocks, it costs them money :)

🦾oh, and fellow trans people: don’t think there aren’t trans nazis. There are. I’ve met them. If a predominantly queer instance is being reported, take it seriously.
Just as there is no “perfect victim” who is always oppressed, there is no “perfect abuser” who is never oppressed. The Nazis have it out for trans people no doubt, but they’re more than happy to play marginalized communities off against each other to divide and conquer until they have the power to fully enact their plans.

🦾mekka is correct in his assessment that #mastodon is being turned into a nazi bar imo. You can here see the mechanism by which that happens. It doesn’t require most instances to being Nazi, it requires a small group of Nazis going around harassing the people they don’t like until those people leave while nobody stops them.
The people the Nazis like may not notice other people getting “jumped,” because *they* get treated “well” by the Nazis. But next thing you know, the bar is de facto whites only, then de facto straights only too, and then soon it’s just nazis as everyone else is gradually run out of town as they take “living space” and colonize the place.
This must be actively fought and resisted, or yes, #fediverse will become “that place the nazis own” and activity pub will fail.

@chriscoreline Great, but a) I am disabled and generally cannot read whole books, and b) I *am* already learning about the basic issues but those crucially do not answer the *very specific* question that I asked in the original post, and like I mentioned, this is a problem *now* and perpetually waiting for the answer to magically coalesce is not really an option.
This whole discussion is kind of moot anyway, because the question was already answered - by a white person, I might add, whom I trust to derive their explanations from what non-white folks have said, as the post asked for - and so I have the answer I was looking for now.

@alexander @chriscoreline I mean, I agree with the idea that you shouldn't *expect* marginalized folks to explain things to you, because it *does* create an unreasonable amount of pressure on the most vulnerable folks, who constantly have to explain themselves.
But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't be asking anything anymore at all either, because that creates the problem you describe where the proper solutions are unknown to people, hence trying to find ways (like the stand-alone question post) that ask but do not expect.

@chriscoreline I've posted it as a standalone question (as I've seen recommended by at least one Black person, incidentally) instead of in someone's replies specifically to avoid this.
I'm also specifically asking because I've been unable to find an answer on this over the past months, and if I want to be able to contribute towards a solution, I can't wait for the answer to magically appear forever - this is a problem *right now*.
