Would people be interested in a blog (with RSS feed) where I make short posts about the new projects/libraries I'm working on or have released, going into what they do and why they exist?

Most of them will be small single-purpose JS libraries that solve a specific problem, with sometimes larger projects and 'end-user software' mixed in.

@researchfairy 100% I have turned down an article similarly.

I refuse to condone any usage of ChatGPT.

Tip for women in science:

Don't collaborate with men who are not allies in the fight against sexism (unless you have no choice, which happens often of course).

You may think it is worth it, but really, it never is. You will end up mistreated and your ideas likely erased.

@lewd I imagine that at some point they concluded that "nobody who is going through this much trouble for tickets, is going to be a fare dodger"

I rarely had a more complicated ticket check :

First, the conductor saw all our D-Ticket cards and was terrified we all only had D-Ticket and nothing but.

Then they saw lots of secure paper. Sadly we had a cursed combination of group tickets for Bas-Rhin, joint single tickets for Moselle and several BahnCard discounts for the German border crossing applied.

After looking for five minutes who of us was on which ticket, they finally decided seeing 13 tickets was enough.

AI; Covid

Back in 2020, I systematically compiled a list of all the drugs in the scientific literature where an AI told us the drug was a candidate for repurposing as a treatment for Covid

None of them got an FDA approval for this indication or an emergency use authorization (success rate 0%)

I didn't end up publishing this because right when I was finishing the project off, it was the heyday of non-doctors prescribing horse-dewormer for Covid and I didn't want to pour gasoline on that fire

@cjwatson (People only ever talk about 'conversion rates' and whatnot, and any attempt at discussing ethics is quickly passed over by finding a flimsy excuse and then getting angry if you question them on it)

@cjwatson I've interacted with that sort of crowd in the past, and yes, they 100% know what they are doing and will justify it by saying "well, it's ultimately their choice to click on it" and other such horseshit. Everything in affiliate marketing works like that, basically.

I visited my Dad today. He's in his mid-80s now, still generally healthy, but some things are getting harder, particularly eyesight. When I visit I usually end up fixing something or other on his computer. Today it was website push notifications that he'd probably accidentally allowed and were pretending to be antivirus software producing scary messages. Also Thunderbird had moved a bunch of its UI around and confused him to the point where he'd felt the only thing to do was to reinstall it.

I'm gonna make a prediction about Threads: they're going to put pressure on the big servers (that are federating with them) to ban sex work and porn "for community safety." And the people who run them will uncritically just accept that's true.

And they'll do it, ineffectually, but they will.

A reminder for no particular reason that issues of racism are not specific to the US; they are just talked about even less in many other places. I'm especially thinking of Europe here.

Likewise, when someone in Europe is calling out racism, that's not because "the conversation has become all about US culture". They are talking about your backyard in Europe.

Not feeling okay about US politics

If a vote for one guy is a vote for genocide, a vote for the other guy is a vote for genocide, and you're out here telling us a vote or non-vote otherwise is a vote for genocide then it seems to me you've admitted that we already have a democracy so impotent that it's incapable of steering away from committing genocide.

You're going to then say anyone who points this out is a shill for Putin who is aiding in the demise of democracy.

Putin isn't the one curtailing the choices to the point that there is no opposing genocide.

@rune I think that at 1000 follows you get to unlock the one-per-second tier of auto-accepter

Referring to fediblock and TBS friendly instances as "fedi HOA" is racist and I can explain how. bringing this post back every time I see a white person doing this

Some white folks are continuing to use "fedi HOA" to describe the group of us who are trying to make the fedi a safer place for BIPOC. Seemingly, they have chosen to disregard the previous critiques that have circulated naming that practice as antiblack. So, I am going to quote myself from September of last year.

The following is an excerpt from this post: blackqueer.life/@tillshadeisgo

"Our Anti-White Grievance of the Day today is (get your white supremacist bingo cards ready, folks)........APPROPRIATION!

And just in case you're going to pretend you don't believe me, I'll give you a previous example and the current example. For the ones that need their hands held.

Our previous example is the word "woke". Woke originated with AAVE some time ago and more recently, in the past several years, has been distorted into almost unrecognizability as an anti-black dogwhistle. How did this happen, you may ask? Why, it's not complicated at all: the covert racists found out a word Black people were using and copied it! Now, similarly to how these instances of racist telephone typically go, they took the word but lost some of the nuance from the term. This led to them frequently misusing it publicly. And once that had started happening, why there was nothing for it but for the overt racists to go ahead and coopt it from the covert racists (who they are obsessed with, by the way) so they could have their dogwhistle term du jour ('politically correct' was starting to wear out). This dogwhistle, mind you, has very little to do with its original usage, but of course they can't tell the difference so they don't care. And so we can see how this was an example of appropriation.

Our more recent example of this phenomenon is none other than the nasty little number lots of you are tossing about right now, fedi HOA. I'm not the first person to point this out of course, but since when have white people bothered listening the first time? For 10 ally points, can anyone in the class tell me the history of homeowner's associations, housing, and white supremacy? Anyone? Well, in case you don't know, feel free to look it up. Throw in redlining, the wealth gap, and the GI bill while you're at it. Those who do so or are already aware, you can understand why a lot of Black folks who tried fedi have spoken about the feeling of HOA-style treatment they received. Some of you were even the ones doing it! And now, in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY AS THE PREVIOUS EXAMPLE, several of you white fedizens started to use the term fedi HOA. Only it's not quite the same thing when you all use it. Lost a bit of nuance, hasn't it? You're not actually talking about a historical comparison of systematic racial discrimination in physical space to systematic racial discrimination in digital space, are you? No, you're using it to mean that Black people and people of color are creating and enforcing boundaries that you don't like.

So, you can understand why that's not the same thing, right? Some of the nuance got lost in the shuffle? Now, can someone tell me (for 50 ally points this time!) why that's bad? Can anyone identify how appropriation enabled antiblack discrimination in both cases? Anyone at all? How about how abusive it is to get this aggressive over someone else's boundaries? No? Yes?

Great. Well, at least you learned something."

i have so much ADHD even my unfinished projects had concurrent unfinished subprojects

First castle done. Not that interesting but still a beautiful landscape. And it is also very quiet :3

Not to brag, but I remember when you could slam the phone down to hang up on someone.

It was spectacular.

Have you ever tried to measure a cat with a tape measure? It will make you question the solidity of dimensional space.

Pica, small cat
Height: 22 to 47cm
Girth: 33 to ??cm (ouch cm)
Length: 37cm
Length w/ tail: 66cm
Weight: 5.9 pounds/ 2.7 Kg
Max Length (Dangle): 74cm! oh no

she's getting longer.

Rate of Enlonganmentation
dML/dt: 1.2cm / second

No signs of increase stopping. Cat keeps increasing.
All clear! ALL CLEAR!
Soon she will be in all locations.

This was a bad project idea.
