fun fact: if you have a laptop or desktop that has an intel cpu with "vPro" on the sticker there's a chance the management engine in your CPU is just hosting a web server at all times.

It's at port 16992

I've been involved with the Internet continuously pretty much since its earliest ancestor ARPANET days at UCLA ARPANET site #1.

I can assure you that the ARPANET and the Internet into which it evolved were NOT designed to provide a means for a handful of powerful AI firms to suck the world dry without permission or compensation of information en masse, that has mostly been put online for free as a public service, all to enrich the coffers and stockholders of those firms, while giving only lip service (if that) to ethical considerations, and giving the sites from which they slurp data the finger, while laughing all the way to the bank.

(You may have seen a similar poll before, sorry - I set it to the wrong duration back then! So here's another attempt. Please vote and boost again for broader reach! :boost_requested:)

Think of some kind of activist cause - it doesn't matter what, as long as it's something you would like to see improved in the world.

If I could guarantee that there were others who agree with you on that cause, and who are interested in organizing some kind of activism with you, would you get involved?

Hey do any of my followers in the UK need a binder? I bought a binder fucking years ago when I first came out as trans and I just didn't really feel it and I've been holding onto it ever since because it was expensive and I didn't want to just throw it away without being sure I didn't want a binder

But I really do need to just let it go I think, I can't really wear it because of how my body has changed since then and rather than throwing it I figured I'd let someone else have a chance at using it

It's a 2xl grey gc2b full vest binder, it's got some loose stitching here and there because of my fat ass tryna put it on when I'd clearly outgrown it but it's basically never been worn for any length of time so it still looks pretty new.
I'm happy to send it out for free if you just cover shipping. Please please boost this so I can try and get this to someone who needs it more than me

Nothing screams modern America like the uber-wealthy underpaying the people who maintain their mansions and estates so much that they have to live in tent cities hidden out of view in nearby woods.

Dear Lazyfedi,

I'd kinda like a good 2in1/convertable laptop/tablet. 13"ish, lightweight, probably Intel (since the Linux driver situation with AMD laptops still seems to be quite variable), doesn't need to be massively high performance

Somewhat ambivalent between detachable and fold back keyboard

Do any of you have a device you like?

Remember Ecosia, that search engine that was claiming to be environmentally friendly by planting trees?

Yeah, guess who just started doing OpenAI/LLM shit...

Like, they were never very credible on the "environmentally friendly" to begin with, but this is an absolute moral bankrupcy

Am building a plant table from salvaged boards from an old shelving unit. Unfortunately had to buy new wood for the beams, because the few beams that I still had laying around were of highly questionable structural integrity (which is not great for a support frame).

we now only have 3 days until nintendo network (and spotpass with it) shuts down, right now only 8% of all wii u spotpass data has been preserved

if you have a wii u system, please see the links above in the thread and help archive this data; once spotpass shuts down, all data that has not been archived will disappear

@Seirdy@pleroma.envs.net This passage from the Mozilla article caught my attention:

"A recurring complaint we heard from our readers was that MDN is excellent when you know what to look for. If you don’t, it’s not easy to discover the information you need…"

Which is indeed something people have complained about for years. For most of those years, it was widely denied as an existent problem.

And shining in its absence is any attempt to fix this through, you know... better writing... the very specific solution people have been asking for for years too.

Unbelievable that they would use this as a justification.

Hot take: "software supply chains" are what happens when it's easier for developers at giant tech companies who have been put on impossibly tight schedules to depend on OSS libraries than on other code written at the same company.

I don't see this getting better, no matter how much corporations fund OSS developers, no matter what SBOMs are deployed, no matter how much OSS code is audited; not until managers internalize that randomizing priorities every six months fundamentally requires developers to depend on whatever OSS is closest at hand.

Everything else is a good idea and should be done regardless, but I deeply see this as corporate schedules being optimized to a completely unsustainable degree.

@njion @tfunken@lyratris.com Also: there are a lot of places that have icky wording like this. Whenever you call it out, the response is always "oh that's not how we intended it, they're supposed to be separate points, this was just easier to understand".

And yet. They get globbed together constantly, specifically these things. One wonders how truthful organizations are when they claim it was unintentional.

I fucking hate this implication that #SexWork is not genuine or positive. The companies ruling over our lives keep getting more and more prude and the oppression of sex workers continues as usual..

And their lack of understanding of power is motivated by a strong desire to justify their own power/privilege.

Back when I was a libertarian, I figured out that there were people who were motivated by racism, but I called this "libertarian for the wrong reasons". I eventually figured out that there was no such thing as a right reason to be a libertarian. There's a reason "left libertarianism" AKA "bleeding heart libertarianism" is still mostly white men.
