on Fediverse bigotry
these forms of bigotry are the oldest in white society, and the most deeply rooted. most of us learn them as truths from childhood without even noticing.
it's not surprising these are the most common forms of Fedi bigotry.
it's not surprising these thought patterns are ingrained in the ways most of you think.
it's just disappointing.

on Fediverse bigotry
it's not surprising the three most common forms of Fedi bigotry are (in no particular order) anti-blackness, antisemitism and misogyny.
it's also not surprising all three of them often manifest here in their most classic form in the 21st century: Jews are an external evil that threatens society; black people are an internal evil that threatens me personally; women are wrong and need to be corrected before they spread their dangerous falsehoods.

And to complete that thought: genuine solidarity looks like bottom-up organizing, among everyday people (the 'workers') for everyone's needs, and *not* like following an esteemed leader, even if that leader seems to speak the language of solidarity.
Note that the phrasing of "capital owners and fascists" is deliberate. Capitalism is not the only oppressive and authoritarian ideology. Fascism can hide in nominally progressive-looking ideology, too. I'm especially looking at some interpretations of communism here.
@rail_ As I understand it, this will soon be a legal requirement in the EU :/
It supposedly is to keep caps from being littered, but I'm really not convinced that that's the problem to be solving here
A quick real-world example of how a company can behave in an 'evil' manner even though nobody involved sets out with explicitly malicious intentions, in a hypothetical SaaS company:
1. Executives set revenue targets for departments to hit, to 'increase efficiency'; departments that do not hit these targets risk being terminated as a cost center.
2. Department manager wants to make sure nobody in their department loses their job, and so tries to maximize the revenue for their department; in the process, they veto things that could result in reduced revenue.
3. Developer ends up not implementing cost controls on their service, because it might unexpectedly block service of customers, which reduces revenue because it's an extra hurdle to reactivate the account or change the limits
4. Customer makes a single mistake and ends up being charged more than they could possibly afford, because there are no cost controls.
Nobody in this chain was being deliberately malicious. Aside from the capitalist nature of the enterprise, everyone involved tried to do what they could in their situation.
And yet, the outcome is a hostile system that will screw people over with little to no recourse, and that is unlikely to ever get fixed.
@sofia@chaos.social @spinach I've found that lots of people still just sort of *assume* it to be "better than nothing", afraid of what would happen without copyright, because they've never really looked into its practical effects and only go by its stated purpose of 'protecting artists'. And so there's no recognition of "copyright literally does not work and does the opposite, it is worse than nothing."
More awareness needs to be built around that, I think, before abolishing it will have any chance of success
sorry big corpos but you do not deserve a payment equal to the opportunity cost of not being a piece of shit just because someone did the same thing as you in a better way. lost sales from having an inferior product is not the same as having money stolen from your bank account. (i'm actually not sorry get fucked)
The most joyous thing I've seen today is a man on TikTok extolling the merits of dating nerds such as himself:
"Don't feel like going out? Good. I usually don't. Why would I spend $120 on three drinks and a cover charge in a nightclub when for the exact same amount of money we can get the brand new Mario Kart, a bottle of tequila, Chinese takeout, and spend the entire night in our pajamas?"
Compelling, I would say!
the syslog() function in glibc has a buffer overflow that lets attackers get root. it's had it SINCE FUCKING 1993. FOR MY ENTIRE TIME ON THIS PLANET.
When will enough be fucking enough and we ban the writing of new programs in C from an industry standards level?
i wish people understood that being non-binary doesn't imply looking androgynous. sorry, i may be fat, have large shoulders, a beard, body hair and a deep voice. i'm still non-binary. i didn't choose to have these traits, nor do I feel particularly interested in changing them. doesn't change the fact that i am not a man
copyright hot take time
@spinach Seemingly often literally, looking at the patterns of "western companies taking ideas that are widespread in other countries and then patenting them locally and trying to enforce them abroad"...
In the process of moving to @joepie91. This account will stay active for the foreseeable future! But please also follow the other one.

Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
