If I were “the most powerful person” in an industry where workers (e.g. editors) are already underpaid and concerned about their jobs and the product (i.e. writers) are very concerned about the impacts of a technology for different reasons, I probably would not tell the New York Times how excited I am about AI. nytimes.com/2024/01/30/books/p

@jacksonchen666 Oh and "best practices" that are actually just tech-company-specific conventions, of course

@jacksonchen666 Many different things, usually varieties on "this is how you do things Like The Big Tech Companies", involving a lot of copypasting and mimicking what others are doing without understanding the problem it was originally meant to solve (which they don't actually have themselves, usually)

I guess people recognize my name because of my VPN gist now...

@jacksonchen666 (Needless to say, those promises were extremely far from reality)

@jacksonchen666 I did private tutoring for Node.js for a while, and like 50% of my work involved un-teaching nonsense that people picked up from absurdly overpriced "courses" or "bootcamps" that promised to make you a programming expert in weeks

We're well on the way to #GoToSocial 0.14.0 release candidate 1!

Based on the sheer amount of fixes and improvements included, 0.14.0 will probably be the biggest release we've done so far :gtspat:

It will also (probably, unless something goes wrong) be the first GoToSocial release to include support for the Move activity, which will let you migrate an existing account to or from a GoToSocial instance, while keeping your followers and following relationships intact :) We waited a long time to write this functionality because we wanted to make sure GoToSocial was in a decent state before people start migrating accounts to it.

So, very exciting! If all goes well, expect more news on the first release candidate in a couple weeks (we're still fixing some bugs, as always).

health, kidney disease, positive

The result is in: my potential kidney donor is officially compatible \o/

There are still some remaining general health/physical tests before final approval, but this is pretty much the biggest hurdle of the process resolved :)

OH: "What do you call the color of the walls here? Landlord white?"

Every time someone calls a Discord group a "Server" I die a little inside

This is your regular reminder that, despite the mass denial everywhere around you, the minimising and the disinformation:

Avoiding infection from a potentially deadly and possibly disabling disease is the right thing to do.

Your health matters a lot.

You're doing great.
Don't need to be perfect, just the best you can sustain, because we're in it for the long haul.

Take care of yourself and each other.

#CovidIsNotOver

i love how once in a while i'll just see a new version of the polyamory flag. the original is so ugly people want to improve it, but also so endearing and nerdy it has inexplicable staying power

I hate how sarcasm and general hostility is so imbued in our culture that neutral or even positive phrases have been decided to now be signs of hostility.

That part of "bypassing much of the agency individual people might otherwise have to avoid them" is reflected in #Google integrating #Bard into android messenger. While academics worry about AI sentience and toy with them as objects of study, this is capitalism baby, and the information conglomerates came to kill each other and capture the market now that investors are calling due on stagnant ad money. It doesnt matter if the LLMs work. That's about as effective of an argument as saying politicians lie. Theyre just the pretense for a new modality of surveillance spanning individuals, groups, businesses, and governments.

Tod, Auto, Fahrrad
