someone linked to this project earlier, and i lost the post and can't find it again

anyway: traditional GPS trackers use a lot of battery. getting a GPS fix takes a long time, and it needs to remember the almanac and do a lot of math and stuff like that.

what this project does is eliminate the "getting a fix" part of it. the board samples the GPS constellation in only 12 ms (!!). the samples can then be post-processed to determine the time and location.

@lucretia "whats the harm?" i say as i behold the horrible consequences i was warned about beforehand from experts i ignored

Just one more innovation bro I promise that'll fix everything just let me innovate one more time, just one more bro I need to innovate let me innovate, please bro this is gonna do it I swear

re: cursed computer

@max You know what, I would not even be surprised anymore by this point

A form confidently concluded my first name must be “Hidde de” and populated that into a disabled “First name” for me.

person, just tryna have fun: "hehehe this is a fun"

man busts through the door, falling to his knees and gasping for breath, and in strained croaks utters "you... should monetize... this"

I made this for my wife when she found a "$20 burger place" that was actually just another ghost kitchen by Denny's (we've previously found a "$20 grilled cheese place" at the same location).

cursed computer

I was running a game under WINE, and it hung while my mouse was captured, so I tried killing wineserver from a terminal to get my mouse back.

This somehow resulted in my entire systemd user slice terminating, which left me staring at my display manager's background with no way to get back into a session. It also somehow segfaulted an Electron in the process.

I swear I have normal computer problems.

re: meta

@JennyFluff@queer.af IMO because they are institutional systems of power (by design) and behave as such, even towards the communities they are supposedly representing

The recruiter spam on LinkedIn seems to have switched from "revolutionizing the Whatever with Blockchain" to "revolutionizing the Whatever with AI" in the past few months 🤔🙄

@erikcats yeah I meant as in feeling guilty for enjoying something! it's something I used to do a lot since I felt my interests were considered 'lame' or 'childish'. no such thing. i will play with toy robots and swoosh around my model airplanes as much as I want and anyone who objects can get the finger.

In case anyone was still in doubt, Google is not at all interested in "organizing the world's information" (despite that language still being in their mission statement). Mixing non-information, LLM-extruded sludge in with authentic information is actually the opposite.

laughing at Slack bug

Customer Slack currently has 1 (one) singular message where the action buttons (like 'add reaction') do absolutely nothing when clicked. Persists after reload. Every other message works fine.

How does this even happen??? This is a baffling failure mode

Relatedly: if you think that "everybody should be building simpler software", maybe help out on addressing the capitalist conditions under which the current development practices have developed?

Like, these practices did not come from nowhere, and there's a *reason* that decades of "just do better" blogposts have not led to meaningful improvements in development practices

I wish people would stop conflating "dependency complexity" with "dependency count". It's ruining a lot of otherwise legitimate arguments, for no other reason than 'number high'.

There is no meaningful complexity difference between 1 dependency that does 10 things, or 10 dependencies from one author that each do 1 thing.

I think making it clear that the stories of fascists are just that, empty promises of a better, uncomplicated world, is one of the main ways to undermine them. But you also have to prevent them from telling simplistic stories in the first place.

Thanks, @bastianallgeier, for telling your history. 🫂
