re: protest stuff

Thinking back to the time that the other fascist broadcaster (powned) tried to get incriminating footage of our Occupy camp, growing visibly frustrated over the next 3 hours as they desperately tried (and failed) to collect incriminating footage and we just kept trolling their interviews because we'd done "how to deal with fascists" media training upfront

They ended up broadcasting like 20 seconds of generic footage, after even their attempt to break our tents failed and they gave up

Fascist reporters can get fucked

Now to wait and see whether the fascist broadcaster has the guts to broadcast their attempt at 'interviewing' me where I made fun of them

tiny political win, covid

Excellent, looks like I ended up in various of the Utrecht protest pictures over at the NOS, wearing a face mask...

This was a sort of tiny sub-goal of going there yesterday and being very visible, the media could do with more visible presence of facemasks... hopefully a tiny contribution to fighting the idea that COVID is "over"

i will also say here's a transcription and subtitles thing that really does need to stop happening, and it grinds my gears despite the fact that i am in no way hoh/deaf:

hey if you let the computer auto-transcribe or auto-subtitles

for the love of all things good on god's green earth

just

fucking

make a real human being

look at the results

with real human eyeballs

and fucking edit it.

special shoutout here goes to the slate.com transcripts for their advice column transcripts. they're so proud of how accessible things are because they made the computer transcribe it! and then, i shit you not, the computer immediately gets the name of one of the podcast hosts wrong, usually in the introduction, and will proceed to get it wrong in new and interesting ways for the rest of the transcription. along with things like the computer being very bad at distinguishing voices conclusively and deciding to err on the side of "too many speakers" than "combining speakers". so you get the podcast hosts as speakers numbers one through fucking nineteen.

it would take a fucking intern maybe all of thirty minutes to simply edit this, and that's being extremely generous in the time limit. for a lot of it they wouldn't even have to listen to the podcast. you just literally need a human brain and human intelligence going "wait a second, the host of this show is named Jenee, not Jenny, not Genie, not Jeanie..." and fucking caring about it.

anyway slate doesn't put comment sections on those podcast episodes probably to keep me from doing exactly fucking this in them because although i do not wish to do free work for the company, their transcript is worse than useless as an accessibility feature. it is the equivalent of saying "of course we have a wheelchair ramp!" and then the wheelchair ramp is rotten wood that will plunge you down into the sewers when it breaks, but the company wants to stand there with their accessibility rewards and be proud of it anyway.

here's a subtitles thing that i wish would stop happening:

re: political hot take

@mdstevens0612 Perhaps there are progressive parties that actually strive for equity, but so far I've not really seen that happen (and this is not restricted to the US - I am also thinking of Dutch political parties here for example, like Splinter and SP).

It seems that a lot of parties interpret "progressive" to mean "improving things" and "conservative" to mean "keeping things the same", but both of these have similar outcomes if equity doesn't factor into it - whether they stay the same for everybody, or they improve for a specific demographic, there is still widespread inequality.

I don't think it's a coincidence that you so rarely see progressive parties getting involved into more radical protests. They often only wish to represent the 'respectable' crowd (which again goes against equity).

Example: "working people should be better socially supported", which excludes those who cannot work for whatever reason

political hot take

I think "progressives" should generally be classified as "right-wing" and not "left-wing", because they generally only seek to improve things for demographics of specific privilege, they don't seek true equity

yes, it is incredibly fucked how companies will raise their prices just to lower them today

and -- irrespective of that -- if they can stand to lower their prices today, they could stand to every day and simply choose not to

and it is true the average person probably isn't aware of these facts

but all that is some corporation's fault, and getting mad at your fellow humans for it is just victim-blaming

i try not to shame people for buying shit on black friday

I guess the answer to “which programming language do you want to use” was “yes”.

An immigrant was the hero yesterday stopping the horrific attack in Dublin.

Not to mention the many immigrants working in our hospitals saving the lives of those attacked.

Don't let the far-right turn a tragedy into hateful racist scaremongering of immigrants.
