The secret recipe for a good toot is to mix equal parts earnest post and joke post.

Now these can be stirred together and strained over a nice image, or shaken and served up in a martini glass.

Every now and then tho, I like to pour them in separately over a bartender’s spoon and create a nice layered effect.

@aethylred Fair. I guess that if enough people genuinely consider it important, it would spread by boosts anyway.

This is one of the few spaces on the internet where we can actively shape the experience ourselves. Where we aren't beholden to the whims of a company that will throw us under the bus for a quick buck.

To me, the fediverse is about having a community of people collectively maintaining this public space where they can freely share their thoughts, passions, and problems. Where they can support each other and keep each other safe with community power.

"Growth" doesn't matter, because the fediverse isn't about capital. It isn't about having the most users possible to advertise to.

Frankly I don't think we should care about brands in order to enable some arbitrary measure of "growth". I want this place to stay human-focused and empathetic, and allowing brands a space to advertise or the power to mold this place will take it in the wrong direction.

@aethylred No no, that's not quite what I mean. Defederated instances are not included, of course, but those aren't the ones I'm talking about.

For any fedi instance, the view that it has of the broader network (as in, the fediverse) is going to be defined by who people on that instance are following.

So it's possible for instance A to have no connection to instance B even though it would be *allowed* to, simply because nobody on A is following B. And accordingly, A won't know about posts on B, hashtagged or otherwise.

Because of this, there isn't really one singular "the fediverse" - it's more a bunch of loose associations where every instance has a different view of "the network", even before defederation gets involved!

This is largely a feature rather than a bug (it's a big part of how the community-building aspect functions), but it makes fedi much less suitable as a 'broadcasting system', and could pose issues when trying to use it as such.

@aethylred With the important caveat, though, that that will only show the posts with that hashtag that your server knows about, which likely isn't *all* posts across the entire fediverse.

@Miaourt Heh, yep, that would've been me. Someone mspainted this avatar for me yeaaaaaaars ago on IRC, and AFAIK I'm the only one using it :p

It's actually meant to be a punny (if a bit non-obvious) illustration of my username, but you're definitely not the first to see it as a potato!

@vkc @bmcgarr That is really the key part, IMO, and also in terms of how it fits into fedi culture and is used in practice.

re: Meta, mocking qoto a lil

@mawr @Guerin @schratze Having talked to the qoto guy elsewhere yesterday, it has only reinforced my view of them as a threat to the safety of marginalized folks.

Oh no. Now that the federation block scanner thing has been making the rounds out in the open on here, I'm afraid we opened up a whole new Box of Pandora.

Three points:

1. You can't give any instance shit for defederating from yours
2. Absolutely do not harass anyone for defederating from you
3. Don't use a tool developed by the fucking kiwifarms crowd!

#TIL The peace symbol (☮️) was created in the 50's to campaign for nuclear disarmament. The symbol is a super-imposition of the semaphore signals for "N" and "D".

I disagree when people say its a shame that Twitter is likely to die - it's been such a huge distraction from making actual social progress. So many people making depressing angry shitposts about headlines instead of getting locally involved and actually *doing things*.

And Musk single-handedly destroying it would be an incredibly useful thing for everyone to witness

Would really appreciate it if people theorycrafting about twitter's imminent demise and it's repercussions could be more aware that some of us basically convert clout into money for a living and most of us were already on a financial knife's edge when twitter wasn't being burned to the ground

Apologies don't count if you're still actively committing the exact same harm

And no one is entitled to forgiveness by the person they harmed

An aggrieved party may extend forgiveness

But it can't ever be demanded by the party who is in the wrong

I just realized that uBlock Origin, which always has a number on it in every page I go t,o has nothing there. Twitter has 538 blocks and growing in one tab. Here it has nothing. I know they said "ad free" but I guess it didn't clock in my head until just now what that meant.
