My number one recommendation to all new (and old) fediverse server administrators is: make your registrations closed, however your software allows for it. For Mastodon I think "registration with a review step" is the minimum level you should be locked down. Open-registration instances are
1) going to get overwhelmed with computing needs
2) likely to break down socially, you have no guarantee that the people signing up are a good fit for your existing people
3) going to host spammers

#FediTips Sealioning disguises itself as earnest curiosity. No matter how sincere you may be about wanting to learn about what someone else is going through, you're contending with all the countless sealions who poisoned that well long ahead of you. It's only natural that someone, especially someone from those marginalized groups who bear the brunt of that abuse, would turn down or push against the risk you may be asking them to take on.
If you're annoyed with all of the fossbro and cryptobro apologists in your mentions, imagine how it must feel to have far worse people nagging you over your lived experiences, never mind over your neurology or skin color.

@ben You know, all this is reminding me of how the 'sexuality' mechanic in the original game was really half-assed by someone obviously-very-cishet, and it never actually got fixed in the base game, it was up to the modders to turn it into something that actually kinda made sense.
And the new mechanics from DLCs feel like they're just kind of replicating this failure mode, and leaving out a lot of depth where it would have been cheap development-wise to add it

@rune Yeah, I do wonder how it'll play out. I'm not super concerned about new instances spawning yet, though there's of course always the risk of "the new generation not learning from the previous generations" if all the instances are run by new folks.
@ben The way they're going about DLC is generally very weird. DLC after DLC after DLC out of nowhere, and from what I've seen, all of them feel really... incomplete? I'm not sure how to describe it.
At least they're not just pumping out existing free mods as DLCs like some games are doing, but it still all feels really rushed.
@dreadpir8robots@infosec.exchange @jerry@infosec.exchange One thing I would suggest adding to the rules explicitly, specifically for the infosec crowd: respect community norms and don't treat the fediverse like a data-mining free-for-all.
Unfortunately quite a lot of infosec folks don't seem to anticipate this expectation by themselves...
