personal opinion:

if you want to post a thing and have it easily available for a long time,

make a static website. doesn't need to be a complicated one. get a website generator, or just write the html yourself. you don't even need a domain, you can use #neocities or some other free service.

because moving a social media profile will always be a complicated process. but a static website can be moved to basically anywhere and will survive for much longer.

I think I managed to understand more about why so many arguments against Mastodon as being too complex bother me, why they get under my skin. It really feels like people aren't arguing against Mastodon in particular, but rather are positively arguing that walled gardens are inherently good. At some point, it seems like the fully corporatized model captured peoples' imaginations such that the internet of the late 90s may no Ionger be possible.

"fediverse is worse than twitter because you can't get viral reach"

Re-boosting your own posts for 'the morning crew' or 'the night crew' is an acceptable and encouraged practice here. We are largely a community of supportive people who enjoy being given the opportunity to help each other and boost content we may have previously missed.

You should never feel ashamed of promoting yourself, especially as an artist, when it's so difficult to reach people. If anyone doesn't want to see your boosts, they can just scroll past.

how to tell whether a watermelon is ripe 🍉

It’s really easy to tell if a watermelon is ripe! First off: thumping doesn’t help, and weight isn’t really a good indicator. But that’s okay because the easiest way to tell is by color. Look for a spot on the melon that’s lighter in color than the rest of the rind: this is the spot that was touching the ground while the melon was growing! If that spot is white, the melon isn’t good yet. When that spot turns yellow, the watermelon is ripe!

If you are into #pinball, this weekend the Dutch Pinball Open is happening in the Dutch Pinball Museum in #rotterdam, and it seems there's still some tickets left. #dpo is fun for recreational players as well as competitive players. Expect lots of different games, all on free play, and a lot of fun! #dpo #dpm

I'll be volunteering, so come say hi if you're coming over!

vaguely political rant

@lawremipsum@mspsocial.net Unfortunately, I'd say it's not *just* the "extremely online" mentality.

All news outlets essentially run on this same principle - they just feed you a perpetual stream of completely non-actionable information that mostly just makes you feel bad, and that *really* is only useful to journalists whose literal job it is to distill long-term meaning from it.

This is not meant to disagree with your toot in any way, of course, just to emphasize that this problem also exists outside of "internet folks", with much the same harmful consequences, and that it's pretty much an (arguably deliberate) cultural cornerstone in many places.

On the Icelandic fediverse/Mastodon I've started seeing people using the word "tútta" for "toot". "tútta" (pronounced toot-ta) is normally a slang term for a boob/tit.

Please reboob this.

@Kuun@climatejustice.social (For those who are reading this from the Netherlands, one such organization is Stichting MEE, at least from what I've heard. I don't know their exact scope though, but I've heard good things from people who have gone there for help.)
