subtoot, venting

I truly cannot stand people who try to make others responsible for their personal guilt.

@mu @nini @eniko Do not make assumptions about my life experiences.

And frankly, learn how to actually think about harm reduction instead of making it about your personal guilt.

@mu @nini @eniko I'm not sure you've *really* read and internalized any of what I've said, and I have very little patience for this kind of "but we must do SOMETHING" rhetoric as a justification for known-harmful policy, so I'm going to step out of this discussion.

If you want to discuss this kind of topic seriously, then I would suggest starting by reading up on the past two decades of "think of the children" policy first, and exactly what those policies have achieved. Because you're still talking about this as if it's a new idea.

@mu @nini @eniko More. The reality of this kind of legislation is that the big social media platforms will find some legal construction to comply with whatever legislation gets produced without ever actually doing anything about the harm, but now queer teenagers in particular get cut off from their support communities, for example.

If I thought this would reduce net harm, we wouldn't be having this conversation in the first place. It doesn't. It never will. Reducing the harm was never the point of this kind of "think of the children" rhetoric.

"Please don't litter XKCDs on my floor" and other completely normal things to say in this house

some people are desperate to be kind to their enemies because having enemies sucks, which is why you must transform them rather than applaud them. nothing but death or a profound reeducation will place love in fascist hearts and neither of those things goes “i gotta hand it to race scientists”

Heya, is anybody driving from Munich to WHY who's willing to take some of my stuff with them?

The people who were going to drive my camping supplies to WHY cancelled. Last time I tried to carry the supplies myself, I got sick from overexertion.

journo adjacent people, I am currently looking for a place where I can publish a piece on how journalism was wrecked and and get som eyes on it.

Anyway, if you have any ideas, lmk

I was just floored and fully impressed that a website correctly detected that I have address protection and offered a simple human readable error message explaining I have to use the alternative login option

@joepie91 If they setup an 'migrate to SteamOS.exe' the same way Ubuntu used to offer an installer from Windows, but better, that would be huge for Linux adoption. Suddenly everybody would know what the KDE Plasma desktop is, etc...

@bananas Yes, so are async callback counters. And just like those aren't used anymore because the vast majority of people shouldn't be working at that low a level and it's really hard to get right...

@mu @nini @eniko (Or well, supposedly it's a side effect. I'm not so sure it was unintentional.)

@mu @nini @eniko Something isn't actually better than nothing when it harms people as a side-effect, which this does.

@operand I haven't been very loud about this despite being familiar with the issue, because I also know that issues with languages often get exaggerated for ideological reasons, and I didn't want to be complaining about it loudly without understanding things better first.

But no, it seems that it really actually *is* this bad...

And in particular, because it doesn't *look* like it's that hard

This practice has been obsoleted, by the way, because people consistently kept fucking them up because it turns out that process synchronization is Very Hard To Get Right
