hot take, politics (2)

And yes, it's left *or* right, not just 'right'.

With leftist views, it just looks different: "it would be great if we could have <leftist thing>, but others will never agree / that's not economically feasible / that will never happen / etc.", because there the fear is not disapproval of morals (like with right-wing views) but criticisms of practicality

hot take, politics

"Moderate" and "centrist" usually just boils down to "either left or right, but being afraid to speak it aloud due to social consequences and/or group dynamics"

nlpol, question

@Heidentweet I am unsure, but given that it's Wilders we're talking about, I don't think his word on that would be worth anything anyway...

re: nlpol, far right, wilders

@eniko I'm kind of surprised the guy actually went through with his threat of "I will resign if this legally impossible thing does not happen", kind of seems like shooting himself in the foot?

re: selfie, no ec, asking for ideas

@soweliniko Crop top of sorts?

“Pride isn't a party to celebrate gay marriage, its a fucking rebellion against queer oppression.”

@kevinriggle

And, by contrast, imagine investing a mere $0.5B into making linters and lexers and code highlighting and meaningful symbol discovery

... *without* LLMs

because that is the true relevant baseline here. If the AI folks let themselves spend literal billions on these flaky-as-hell tools

Imagine what those of us who *plan* could do
@quinn

Turns out this was never actually a technical argument, huh?

But instead an ideological one, being unwilling to trust other people but being totally fine with trusting a technology regardless of its track record

Show thread

It's particularly 'funny' how people who have been complaining about dependencies for years and how they're too big a risk and you can't trust anyone to get it right and you're irresponsible if you're use them, etc. etc. etc.

... are now singing the praises of a *known and documented* lying and plagiarism machine that has absolutely no provenance tracing whatsoever, nor any sort of isolation of the third-party code, nor any understanding of the problem domain, nor any way to even *talk about* the unmanaged dependencies it dumps into your code base with a shared language (like you can do with, say, package names)

Show thread

"LLMs are great at writing boilerplate code that you don't want to deal with!"

Bud, friend, pal, have you heard of this thing called 'dependencies', they're written by people who actually understand the problem domain and you can even update them!

Also i dunno but it’s just really hard for me to be interested in trying the fancy expensive, high-investment versions of the tools when the free versions are all unfit for purpose. Like not just bad but wrong. There’s a bare minimum of purpose alignment that something has to meet for me to consider investing more deeply in it and ALL of the free stuff I encounter is so unfit as to be actively offensive

Show thread

I find that all of this makes me incredibly angry. Like, what the fuck are we doing here. Why are we doing this? Who are we doing it for?

a lot of even liberal Germans are weirdly defensive about their dysfunctional, openly classist, evil and 100% indefensible education system :thonking: when you point out that no other country in the world has anything like locking children for life into white or blue collar career paths at ages fucking 10-12 (!!!) and that, therefore, the whole thing with "if you don't improve your grades you'll be kicked down to Realschule" is not just cruel and evil but entirely unnecessary, because, again, nobody else does this 19-century-Prussia-ass class segregation so why do you think only you need it?? nobody else in the world burdens their kids with a lifelong curse like the Abitur why do you think only you need to have such a thing as an Abitur??—it doesn't matter how much evidence you show, it's like hitting a brick wall. They go "yes but it's not meant that way..." "I have an aunt who went to Realschule and she's proud..." "the problem is the lack of money, the teachers are overwhelmed" bitch the teachers are overwhelmed everywhere no, the problem isn't lack of funding the problem is your system is formally sanctioned eugenics.

> Gymnasium children wear grey. They work much harder than we do, because they're so frightfully clever. I'm really awfully glad I'm a Hauptschülerin, because I don't work so hard. And then we are much better than the Realschule kids. Realschüler*innen are stupid. They all wear green. Oh no, I don't want to play with Realschule students. And Sonderschüler*innen are still worse.

the only difference with Huxley is that you think it's progressive because you abolished uniforms. at least in Brave New World they gave kids drugs to ease the pain, children in a literal dystopia were considerably happier than in the German school system

nlpol, question

How do people feel about Wilders fucking off? Good thing, invitation for worse fascists to show up next round of elections, something else?

@elilla From the description, that unfortunately sounds very similar to the school system in the Netherlands (which yes, is very much classist and discriminatory in several other ways too...)

Wij zeggen: Tanks? No thanks!

re: LB (on community health)

this is something i've been mulling over for a while now, but i think never actually posted. in short: community health is not just an individual responsibility, but also a community one.

there is an individual responsibility to communicate and seek treatment, like the people did in this example. let people you're cuddling with know that you have a weird rash or itch, doctors said it's probably just an allergy but just fyi. and then when someone else starts getting one (like person b and c here), they have an opportunity to connect the dots.

but there's also a community responsibility. to normalize talking about things, like this post, so we can learn from each other. to think about how infectious disease spreads in our community and about ways we can act.

we keep ourselves safe. we keep ourselves healthy.

(more posts to come but i need a break. it's the same with covid etc.)

PSA, Scabies and why it's not always that easy, ph

"You should just immediately know when you got scabies and make sure not to spread it!" You think that's easy? Let me tell you our little tale of woe!

It's February Person A notices some itching and a few spots on their hands. As there's been a few fedi posts about scabies, they panic and think it's scabies, so the next day when they're home they try to contact a Dr. Unfortunately, there's no general practitioner with a quick appointment
