Quick remarks on where the term "agentic AI" fits in and why it's a sign of the crumbling hype.

tante.cc/2025/05/12/on-agentic

@navi @darkii@chaos.social Here the definition of 'urgent' includes "the person is on the move and must be intercepted before losing track of them", not sure if it's the same there?

@gsuberland@chaos.social The "code yellow" thing, isn't that exactly the push for user-hostile engagement trickery that the new executive dude ended up pushing through despite pushback from the search team?

how am i supposed to be emotionally vulnerable and share beauty i see in the world and poeticism and thoughts and my deepest fears if it all gets shrugged off or washed out by irony? how? this is such a shallow way to look at the world and life in general

@hazelnot I don't know this for certain, but my guess is that laptops and such have a 'bypass circuit' that allows the device to run directly off mains when available, whereas in phones and such the power is always drawn from the battery which may happen to be getting charged at the same time.

If this is the case, then a laptop should work without any battery at all (which it typically will) but a phone shouldn't (which I don't know whether it's the case).

@jonah Nope, separately - I've tried the Jellyfin plugin for Kodi years ago and found it miserable to interact with 😕 Very slow, and a lot less intuitive than Jellyfin's own UI (very "everything is a list").

I plan to use the Jellyfin web interface with the "control from other instance" feature in the mobile app, so that I can essentially use the NUC as a media player target.

We've also set up an auto-hide Plasma panel for switching between applications, bound to the Menu key (so it works from my USB remote); it has shortcuts for the different media player applications and a large-UI task switcher to switch between them.

So if you press the Menu button on the remote, the panel pops over whatever is currently running (even if fullscreen) and lets you navigate between applications with the arrow/OK buttons, or if you press Menu again it disappears again.

(Jellyfin is set up to run in Firefox in kiosk mode. Altogether it *almost* feels like an off-the-shelf commercial product in terms of polish, heh)

"Tempting as it may be to look to the War on Drugs during the Reagan era as the seedbed for state practices of racialized surveillance, interdiction, and incarceration, both the Reagan era’s escalation of these practices and the presumption of Martin’s guilt are bound up with the criminalization of blackness that emerges in the context of US slavery. This is a history of racialization in which black agency is figured as criminality."

i am so tired of people when someone shares their meaning or interpretation of the artwork and someone goes "ha what if the curtains are just blue actually". like yeah congrats dude what did you achieve by saying this. did it make you feel good. are you happy? do you want a cookie for how "special" and "contrarian" and "not like everyone else" you are?

people have no joy and no imagination in their life

@navi Don't know what it's like there, but here (in NL) in the odd few cases that I've notified train staff of something, they always seemed to be careful not to reveal to the person in question who notified them

@joepie91 For some reason I had to immediately think of some anti-plastic people who threw away all their plastics to replace them with wood/steel/glass stuff and tell others to do the same.

ok so what do I do if I think someone is running scam calls while in the family compartment of a RailJet?

I do question the wisdom of recalling the product, ie. telling people to *throw it away and replace it*, when the problem with the product is that it contains a substance which is environmentally harmful if it ends up in the environment...

Happy birthday to #mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani (1977-2017)! The Fields Medal, one of the most prestigious #math awards, is awarded to mathematicians < 40. In 2014, she became 1st woman to win. Her research included Teichmüller theory, hyperbolic geometry, ergodic theory, & symplectic geometry, and Fields committee cited her work in “the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces”.
