It is also worth noting that none of the self-hosted infrastructure around NixOS ever seems to have this problem

Tech people always defend the SaaS providers with "well they are the experts at running things at scale, we need them" and then nixpkgs breaks Github for the fifth time for no apparent reason except that the repo is big

I don't know about the "vast majority of his fan base" claim, but the other points are good ones regardless.

@jbz Obligatory warning that "Morpheus Research" looks like a short seller.

These are traders who try to profit from shorting stocks by creating a controversy, whether well-founded or not, to crash the stock.

They do sometimes dig up legitimate issues, but their motivation certainly isn't one of "informing the general public" and they have a tendency of embellishing things to create a panic.

Aww yeah, the Godot game engine 4.5 dev 3 snapshot is out.

For those of you to whom that's just alphabet soup, 4.5 dev 3 integrates AccessKit! This means that the editor UI, and any game UIs made with it, are screen reader accessible out of the box.

I just spun up an instance in a Fedora distrobox. Haven't gotten far, but the intro and project creation dialogs are certainly usable. Though the creation dialog seems to set its content as the label for all fields which is verbose. Filing that issue but still this is an amazing development!

re: politics

@mjdxp @ramin_hal9001 This is kind of a weird response?

Like, you're arguing that it "doesn't mean they should be barred from using an operating system", but nowhere in the original post was that even suggested?

For me, this is the best image symbolizing what Gen AI actually is. A black box, burning the planet, understood best, paradoxically, through technological means.

What you see here is a thermal image of xAI's Datacenter in Memphis, where 33 methane power generators are burning without permission.

@joepie91
Plastic and also crappy, that's awesome!
Right up there with when I learned the "Celestial" in "Celestial Seasonings" tea refers to their extraterrestrial cult and isn't a cute play on their sleepytime tea or something.

saw a facebook reel showing a tram being rebooted by putting the pantograph down and back up again and i have never felt a greater sense of community with everyone else who has to suffer with computers

(Previously: the PLA-in-teabags stuff, them seemingly having removed ceylon from the Yellow Label tea, the supposedly 'forest fruit' tea actually being red fruit and the forest fruit apparently not being available anymore, the earl grey being bitter garbage, the orange tea no longer tasting like it used to...)

why must partition labels and filesystem labels be seperate

I have to say, Pewdiepie's video on Linux was... a lot better than I had expected.

i need advertisers to understand that putting an asterisk on a claim looks so insanely suspicious that they would've been better off not making the claim

@eta (And I see it more as "attaching consequences to choices" than as "violence", exactly, even though the mechanisms are similar)
