world politics

@SehrLesbisch@chaos.social That is half the point of demilitarization; removing the accumulated structures of violence and power that said nazis invariably end up taking over, and instead developing better ways to deal with these issues proactively as a society

world and NL politics, long-ish

@Heidentweet While I'm inclined to agree, I've personally started focusing more on actions than on intentions - I would rather incite a change in culture so that people recognize inaction as a problem, than endlessly debate about whether someone "really" is actively malicious, which a lot of people don't *want* to be convinced of and so never will be.

There was a long queue to the repair shop. There always seemed to be, these days.

The areas for fabrics and fibre, wood, metal, mechanics and electronics were all busy, but none more so than the dreams section.

"Oh, this has taken some beating, poor thing."

"Can you fix it?"

"We'll do our best."

2025 will be the year of "oh god there are no good browser options left to switch to"

Found at a crosswalk in Amsterdam. The sticker is attributed to @tesseltenzweege.

I will slowly start posting all the stickers I take photos of. Many of them will be under the hashtags at the bottom of this post, if you'd like to mute those terms (namely #AmsterdamPublicComment). I'll still always try to CW as best I can, but the bulk of them will be nlpol (like this one), uspol, pspol. I haven't actually created any of these stickers and I'm never the one sticking them to things (unless I'm covering up something worse).

These will always be left leaning messages but will most frequently cover:

saying right leaning politicians, parties, and governments are badsquatting good, housing good
veganism good, animal abuse bad
fossil fuels bad
pro Palestine content
pro kurdistan content
pro union stuff
pro trans/queer stuff

There is an annoying number of things on linux that would be really handy to have an api for rather than reading magical device files, for instance `/sys/kernel/mm/hugepages/` to get the types of hugepages the system supports.

I would love a `sysconf` for that, or w/e

world and NL politics, long-ish

Maybe you've already heard of Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO, victim-blaming Zelensky and completely lacking any sort of spine regarding the aggression and abuse from Trump.

This guy was our prime minister in the Netherlands for many many years, and he was *exactly* like this here - completely spineless, wishful thinking, always being an apologist for the authoritarian, and excelling in doing absolutely fuck-all about any kind of problem while putting on a smile and pretending all is fine.

He and his party are the reason our entire country is stacking crisis upon crisis now, and why lots of government infrastructure is falling apart after having been neglected for over a decade, and now everyone has to scramble to pick up the pieces.

He is not doing "careful diplomacy" despite what some people may claim (or want to believe), and you only need to look at the trajectory of the Netherlands over the past decade to see the hard evidence of that. What he's doing is playing the 'enlightened centrist' while collecting a massive payout for declaring everything someone else's problem.

Rutte is an avatar for the banality of evil. He's the useless middle manager trying to justify his existence in the org chart, but on a nation-state scale.

re: PSA, powertools, physical injury

@Kuniti_shino Yeah that's somewhat acceptable at least (though I would still never use the continuous mode); but the one I was looking at *only* has a continuous mode 😕

@mei The integration problems are not so much technical in nature as they are political; the integrated ticketing is an extremely long-running topic of controversy.

There are certainly technical factors involved as well, but they're mostly of the "this is a decades-old system that is really difficult to modify and we don't really want to" variety which tend to require politics to resolve

re: kde question

@Ember That does sound like a bug then; I have not really modified my launcher config at all, it's pretty much the default

re: anecdote from a local space re: PSA, powertools, physical injury

@navi I mean, making a stationary tool out of a handheld tool *could* at least be a reasonable thing to do... assuming that the person doing it has done sufficient research on safety and ergonomics (which sure doesn't sound the case here)

anecdote from a local space re: PSA, powertools, physical injury

@navi I would be having Words with that person if I saw that

achievement culture is toxic unless you achieved safety, health, happiness, or achieve helping others get safety, health, and happiness :neocat_floof_angel:

kde question

@Ember Just tried it out here and typing "4+2" and hitting enter just puts the result in the search box but does not copy it

FISH 🐟
DOORBELL 🔔
TIME ⏰

In the Netherlands, spring fish migration has begun! This literal live stream from a manually operated canal lock in Utrecht lets you click a button when you see fish, which sends a screenshot and lets the lock-keeper know to open the lock and let fish through.

The #Visdeurbel returns March 3 and there will be some exciting additions: updates from 4 fishways (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_lad) across the Netherlands! The latest Visdeurbel news report explains: youtu.be/BQNPNQ6Ui2Q

visdeurbel.nl/

@mei I imagine this is because we don't have (standardized) integrated ticketing and so some operators probably pre-purchase and then re-sell tickets using their own fare structure basically, with no connection to DB's pricing engine

re: PSA, powertools, physical injury

@gilgwath Yeah, I was surprised too. I thought this was legally required by now in EU. Apparently not?
