Stukje wijsheid uit de werkplaats: "turning right oppresses, turning left liberates"

i wonder if there will come a day when i realize i can recall people's pronouns with clarity but i still blank on their names even after i've known them for years and shit

@joepie91 Thanks! I'll look into both. I've been looking into solutions where groups of individuals can pool their resources for a project like this and it seems like it's needed now more than ever.

@silvermoon82 Seems so! I found out about this because of the Wikipedia article for CDRWIN mentioning that it would allow setting up this device to use it from the program.

@KuJoe That could certainly be a useful option here!

Garage may also be worth looking into, though it has much weaker protections against malicious nodes - it's more useful if you control all of the storage systems involved and just want to distribute the data among them.

TIL about the Kodak Disc Transporter, which seems to have been a peripheral you could connect to your computer back in the day to automatically load and unload CD-Rs from your computer as you were burning them?

Also, more generally, consider that institutional organizations are *much* more vulnerable to hostile action than chaotic local collectives which do not have clear operators or representatives.

It pays to store a copy in some obscure organization that's difficult to figure out as an outsider, even if they don't have professional infrastructure to support it. Deliberate censorship is the bigger risk right now, not accidental data loss.

Hey, so uh, please keep in mind that the Internet Archive is located in the US. While they are an independent organization in principle, that sure isn't going to stop a fascist like Trump or Musk, who definitely has physical access to their facilities and the impunity to go with it.

All of which is to say: make sure to also back up the data you're archiving in a place that is *not* in the US or its direct sphere of influence! There is only so much the Internet Archive can do to insulate themselves from fascist actions.

US politics, the coup, and data scrubbing

Apologies for not CWing the original post. Consider boosting this here toot so that people can choose to engage or not.

For Global Switch Day, I'll recommend my blog post about switching to Linux. I wrote it for academics, but other professionals might benefit from it:

Your sexuality and your gender are not matters of government decision. They are what you yourself decide they are.

You are the truth. Resist authoritarianism.

*Romance is often viewed as smut's distant respectable cousin, but sex scenes are sex scenes, & we all have common cause in a puritanical world with growing censorship & deplatforming.

@hazelnot @tobi Also, I'm more generally frustrated with such loud 'criticisms' of Wayland, about it 'not supporting' things. It is still being developed, of course it's missing stuff! Software doesn't just emerge fully formed from the aether, people have to build it first and that takes time!

That could have been communicated better by distros who adopted it, sure, but if you're going to issue loud technical criticisms at least make sure you have done the most cursory look into the subject matter!

I don't know who needs to hear this but Gilette Venus Smooth and Gilette Mach 3 blades and handles are interchangeable 🪄

Mach 3 blades are anywhere between 50c and €1 cheaper per blade than even most basic Venus blades and they are WAY sharper and give a smoother shave with a little extra care.

Venus handles are WAY more comfortable to hold, especially when wet.

Do with this information what you will.

something that bluesky does that I think other platforms should adopt is not leaving alt text in a tooltip. if you click on an image with alt text in bluesky, it puts the text in a box below the image. this is extremely handy if you want to do things like copy alt text easily for, say, translation purposes

@hazelnot @tobi Either that or they're going off some Wayland 'criticisms' about missing APIs that haven't been true for many years now

It's weird seeing how people in online communities eventually develop this near-hostile copy-pasta way of answering questions. It often stems from an advice being correct in some cases, but becomes insanely frustrating when it's offered as a solution to something that sounds bit like the original problem but isn't and now the original poster gets ridiculed for not taking the obvious right answer.

People from IT may recognise this as "It's always DNS" or "sfc /scannow".

Pinball people might recognise "Replace BR2 and C5".

Debugging mysterious problems and just talking about it online in the hopes of fresh perspectives seems to just cause a flood of this copy-pasta, with people getting offended when told this wasn't it.
