Fascist propaganda, fascist terminology

"but people have to be aware of fascist propaganda!"

Yes, share info on it, talk about it, keep people informed. Fascist propaganda isn't all racial slurs and swastikas. People have to be made aware that even words like "cuck", "degenerate" or "asocial" are fascist propaganda. They have to know about the fascist background of many popular memes.

However,

But many historic museums have a clutter room, or clutter wing, or clutter floor, and if you ever spot one you should definitely give it your time, because there you’ll find the odd little knickknacks, contraptions, whatsits & doohickeys that capture the creativity and materiality of past eras 10/?

Sharing for my countdown to the release “Inventing the Renaissance” coming Feb UK/Mar US buff.ly/4j6qkoS #HistoryPix

In light of US tech oligarchy setting its sights on Wikimedia Foundation, a historical detail I did not know before: #Wikipedia became the non-profit it is today partly as the result of a labour strike of Spanish Wikipedia editors who disagreed with the proposed inclusion of advertisements. Initially, it was not clear what revenue model Wikipedia would get, and Wales moved towards a for-profit model already a year after launch. However, rather than working for free, so Jimmy Wales could profit from their labour via advertising, Spanish contributors forked Spanish Wikipedia as the Encyclopedia Libre Universal. Under the threat of losing the editorial community of such a large language, Wales conceded and set up the non-profit.

That is to say, however imperfect they are, all the digital commons we have are the result of ongoing struggle and hard work to keep them as commons.

hey. listen

go play that video game you excitedly got on steam sale with so much enthusiasm, but never played

go play that game from your childhood that made you happy, that let you escape from the awful around you

go play that game your friend made and tell them all the cool things about it

go play that game your friends are all into but youve been too socially anxious to join in on

go play anything. your mental health will thank you for the break and youll love yourself a bit more, which goes a long way when we're all stretched too thin to give everyone the love we all deserve

Periodic #infosec reminder: AirDrop is insecure. You should treat any device with it enabled like it's continually blasting your name, email address, and phone number to everyone and everything within Bluetooth range. It cannot be fixed without a complete protocol rewrite and break in compatibility. I have not yet seen a single "safely bringing your device(s) to a protest" article that even mentions this.

Re: "the "AI" won't work"

Yes. Of course it won't. None of it does. That should be a given. Criticising the "AI" as not working in most cases misses the point and detracts from the larger problems of power accumulation, labor deskilling, wealth extraction, etc. I feel like "it won't work" increasingly falls in the category of "the computers aren't thinking" as sort of true but orthogonal criticism.

Another way of saying it is that even if it did work it would be extremely bad to replace all human scientists with a gigantic for-profit AI farm

@old_angry_queer They will have to find ways to vent that don't involve platforming fascists and legitimizing their rhetoric

Seriously, what is wrong with these people who continue trying to 'find flaws' in and dunk on the fascist plans of Trump and his cronies?

They never intended to argue anything in good faith, they are fascists and the only way to deal with those is to punch them and/or tell them to fuck off, how have you people STILL not fucking realized this so many years later

Reddit is a troubled platform and has always been cringe, but if you are interested in digital governance stuff, its fiefdom moderation structure never stops being fascinating. Reddit does seem to be capable of doing collective action in a way that platforms that lack any nucleating pattern aren't. If you're designing social web tech and are designing it around individual users rather than groups, you're probably doing it wrong.

you know that feeling when you get an appliance and there's a manual but you're like "I'm never going to need this because if I need to fix it I can look it up online"

that was the "living in a world where google actually works" mindset and you should probably stop doing that

parasociality and celebrity culture in the age of fascism

we're going to have to be more honest about ourselves, our allegiances to losers who don't invest or sustain our communities, and many other parts of this sick society we accept as normal yet contribute to. we're going to start to be honest about people that we're quick to put on a pedestal because they do a thing we like.

parasociality and celebrity culture in the age of fascism

folks will follow and defend their beloved deified artists and models and politicians and bloggers off of a cliff at the expense of themselves, their communities, and basic common sense and ethics.

this is especially true in fandom spaces.

it's actually a major problem we're gonna need to discuss again and again, especially as they continue to be used to sanitize fascism more and more overtly.

parasociality and celebrity culture in the age of fascism

the celebrity class is like a lifelong proverbial addiction for the masses — and that includes you, reader.

yes, even if you are a card-carrying event organizer leftist.

don't kid yourself into thinking you can be immune to influence.

we're gonna need to be a lot more honest going forward, especially in this era, about the ways we've all been socialized to devotion and worship of these figures. it's unhealthy and dangerous.

"Trump just declared everyone legally female, why did he do this is he stupid?" Democrats are a fucking joke if this is how they're handling the next four years lol
