dream

Tonight's dream: I was trying out some highly immersive VR thing that included touch and taste and all that. It was like a 10-20 minute walk through various landscapes and environments in really high detail, with glass-pane fences that really *felt* like glass panes.

For some reason there were pallets of free samples for various instant meals and foods/shakes dotted throughout the walking path (some of them quite nice!), and at the end was a large area with promotional booths and buildings.

The 'highlight' was an absolute shitpost of a promo booth, called 'Easyjet GoGo' and dressed up and advertised to imply that it was some kind of flight simulator experience, but when you queued for it and it was your turn, you would eventually discover that it was... a highly overengineered portable toilet building 😂

blockchain billionaire at FOSS community event

Heh, Drew is organizing a sit-in to protest against Jack Dorsey (former CEO of Twitter, billionaire, Bitcoin and blockchain enthusiast) holding a keynote at #fosdem2025.

health, +

This is my favourite graph right now

cool thing I noticed: when hetzner generates root passwords for servers, they never include "y" or "z", and also no "O" or "0"

@0x6e6174 I have heard of this phenomenon mostly in the context of plurality, where system/collective members do not necessarily have access to each other's memories.

health update, transplantation (9)

It's now day 3 after the surgery. I can get out of bed and walk independently, albeit slowly. I've showered again, and can do that mostly independently too; just not bending over. I might walk around the hallways a bit later today.

Blood pressure is high and still a point of concern, blood sugar is a question mark (rising a little but still okay). Otherwise seemingly no side-effects from the immunosuppressive medication, and I also don't feel like I have a permanent cold anymore. Catheter is still a huge pain, as is the wound drain.

Overall very optimistic!

health update, very positive, transplantation (7)

@pascaline Dankjewel :)

proposal: a game that is just a creative management game engine and you can download mods that additively combine prisons, theme parks, hospitals, factories, restaurants, cities, beaver cities, etc.

Weird thing that warms my nerd heart is when I see messy desk/workbench/etc pictures on here. Yay, a space actually being used! Sure, a prettied up glamor shot of a workspace is nice too, but a space in use just feels right - or maybe I'm just happy to see I'm not the only person who can't keep any active workspace clean to save my life 🙂

Asking for advice re: innoculating against elder-targeted scams

Does anyone have any tips for talking to their parents about elder-targeted scams? My mom is on Facebook and I think she is usually pretty canny, but I want to encourage her to reach out to me if she ever starts talking to someone new online that could be a romance scam or similar. I don't want to insult her or invade her privacy if she is talking to someone real, and I'm just not really sure of the best way to start that conversation.

One of my grandmothers was poisoned and robbed by mail-order medication scams, thankfully we saw the mailers once when we were visiting before it got ruinously or dangerously far, but she never thought to reach out and ask because she was very proud and didnt think it was anyone else's business. That was 15-20 years ago and the scams seem supercharged compared to then, and I'd like to avoid that if possible.

its inaccurate to be like well humans suck and elon musk types will come along every so often and wreck things...

what the anthropological record suggests is that many human societies have evolved cultural technologies that prevent people like elon musk from taking over. what's most interesting to me is that as communal mammals, we are quite capable of devising social structures that keep our worst impulses in check, we've done it in many times and places

Last August, Lynch (who had emphysema) said he might never direct again because of the "let it rip" covid unmitigation strategies adopted by governments everywhere.

Wondering how many mourners would willingly, and without prompting, wear a mask around people suffering from Long Covid, respiratory illnesses, or other immune dysfunction, out of respect for their struggle, instead of placing the entire burden on vulnerable disabled people.

#DavidLynch

the truly bizzarre thing is that all of these are simultaneuosly true:

this process contains a circuilar dependency
there is absolutely zero documentation of how to deal with this circular dependency for anyone
this is still, so far, the easiest and lowest-paperwork immigration process I've ever encountered
