Update: After this blog post was written, we learned Meta revised its public "Hateful Conduct" policy in ways EFF finds concerning. We are analyzing these changes, which this blog post does not address.

Facebook fascism
Gone is the clause saying you cannot compare women to "household objects or property." Also removed is a prohibition on claiming that there is "no such thing" as a trans or gay person.
Added in to the policy are new clauses apparently designed to explicitly allow common anti-trans arguments, such as advocating for trans people to be banned from public bathrooms, school sports, or certain jobs.
"We do allow allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation," reads one exception. The same section previously said that users couldn’t call protected groups “freaks” or “abnormal”.
Meta also replaced language banning “generalizations” about a protected group’s “inferiority” on the basis of “intellectual capacity”. Now the new language merely bans “unsupported comparisons” between protected groups’ on the basis of their “inherent intellectual capacity” — seemingly opening the door to scientific racism.
Fucking awful. Absolutely do not want to hear "good thing I don't use Facebook" etc. Because your parents probably do and most of the people you grew up with do too.

@anthropy Oh, ideologie kan zeker een geldig argument zijn, dat is het probleem niet - alleen moet dan wel erkend worden dat die ideologie een rol speelt, hij moet niet onuitgesproken blijven :)
Dat is ook hoe ik op de definitievraag terecht kwam - vaak behandelen mensen het concept 'eerlijk' als een soort van universele moraal, die er zomaar is en objectief voor iedereen hetzelfde is (of zou moeten zijn). En daarmee verbergt het de rol die de onderliggende ideologie daarin speelt.
@anthropy Het zal inderdaad context-afhankelijk zijn, maar dat zou an sich een definitie niet in de weg moeten staan; dat betekent alleen dat de context-afhankelijkheid op e.o.a. manier onderdeel moet zijn van de definitie.
Maar ik vraag me dus af hoe je dat zou kunnen definieren. Ik kom zelf niet verder dan "dat iets eerlijk is, betekent dat je vindt dat het past binnen je ideologie", en de specifieke ideologie zal dan verschillen.
Voorbeeld: er zijn genoeg mensen die niet *kunnen* werken. Is het eerlijk dat die geen of minder geld krijgen? Als je een kapitalist dat vraagt, zal die waarschijnlijk ja zeggen. Als je een anarchist dat vraagt, zal die waarschijnlijk nee zeggen.
Maar als het klopt dat 'eerlijk' puur een ideologische vraag is, en daar lijkt het wel op, dan betekent dat ook dat 'eerlijkheid' niet als argument gebruikt kan worden zonder de onderliggende ideologie te erkennen...
@anthropy Maar is dat ook hoe mensen de term (in het Nederlands) gebruiken? Ik denk dan vooral aan gevallen waar je in het Engels 'fair' zou gebruiken.
Bijvoorbeeld: "het is wel zo eerlijk dat mensen die harder werken, beter betaald krijgen".
Wat betekent 'eerlijk' in die zin precies? Even los van de waarheid van de opmerking.

So Zuckerberg has basically just said "we're gonna do whatever Trump wants", and has started explicitly allowing hate speech in the most recent policy change.
I would like everyone who insisted that Facebook "isn't that bad" and "is working on improving things", to explain to me exactly how this fits into that.

@time_for_kindness A note for men who think "I couldn't help her because she'd think I was a creep too": you can absolutely help her. You go up to the dude and say something along the lines of "hey man, great to see you again - didn't we meet at that conference (party, concert, etc)? The one with whats-his-face?" and get him talking to you instead of to her. And if he follows her anyway, then you start in on "hey man, I don't think she wants to talk to you - leave her alone”.

Dat lijkt misschien een simpele vraag, maar volgens mij is het nog best lastig te definieren.
@archeokluit Het heeft ook heel lang geduurd voordat ik me er comfortabel bij voelde om een vaatwasser in bedrijf open te trekken. Eigenlijk pas toen ik begreep hoe een vaatwasser intern werkt (heel klein beetje water in een basin dat steeds gecirculeerd wordt, dus hij is nooit 'vol water' en kan dus niet overlopen).
Maar dat leerde ik dus pas na vele jaren.

Don't use a machine that helps them do that. Put more fingerprints on things, not less.
