I updated my bio. I am still interested in machine learning, and I am continuing my own projects in this area, but this terminology has become synonymous with an ideology and culture to which I am diametrically opposed.

There is great value in tools like optical character recognition, speech recognition, and machine translation (when ethically applied). However, the current regime selling machine learning tools as products is completely disconnected from what I would view as a healthy and productive contribution to society.

I would still like to contribute to practical applications of mathematics in the world, and I hope that academia will continue to support my efforts to contribute in a way that supports everyone, not just a small cadre of plutocrats.

it's always nice when a mandatory phone number field that doesn't need to be mandatory, also doesn't check the format of what we type into it

so that we can write "like hell" instead of just all zeroes or whatever

@ansuz Essentially what I need is temporal and positional context; which tabs were opened approximately when, and in relation to what else? And this needs to be tracked automatically with no extra effort from my side. Which is pretty much what tabs do, but bookmarks don't.

Folders don't really fix this because you explicitly need to manage them, and I've actually *tried* using those for this and it mostly just ended up breaking Firefox with the amount of bookmarks I accumulated. Apparently it has trouble rendering the menu now...

@ansuz Think "several thousand tabs". I have many different projects that I switch between a lot (ADHD, so no reliable focus control), and if each project needs 50-100 tabs for various research purposes, it quickly racks up the total.

(FWIW, I think Firefox is mostly fine at handling a lot of tabs, it does so better than Chrome. It does have pretty bad failure recovery, but that's probably not specific to having lots of tabs, and I've also seen apparent resource leaks with low numbers of tabs.)

@ansuz Speaking as someone with a lot of tabs, for me it's a workaround for bookmarks not having any contextual memory (in what context the page was open, what other things were open near it, etc.) - bookmarks could absolutely replace my tab usage *if* they were implemented differently from the standard 'entry in a list' design.

(And also, this is a disability aid for me.)

Canada Post doesn't "lose money". It's a service, it *costs* money. No one ever says the military "loses" billions of dollar a year. No one says the RCMP loses money. No one ever says the police "lose" money.

But when it's something that benefits people - suddenly it's not a cost, it's a loss.

✨ Fijne 13/12!

I see people are unhappy with bluesky's owning corporation doing corpo shit

element (matrix), shitpost

element should publish a blog post today

ayo, i figured out what those criminally undersized top shelves in some bombardier double-deckers are for!

@rail_ FWIW this "anti-GMO, anti-chemicals" thing is more or less the Facebook version of anti-capitalism, so all jokes aside, it's often worth engaging with and taking into consideration when doing political stuff, with the understanding that it's based in a lack of knowledge about power dynamics

@halva @rail_ The funniest part is that of all the things you could buy in a supermarket, this is one of the ones that *most* qualifies as a 'chemical' in the colloquial sense

@eniko I have to restart my Firefox about once a day due to various issues, including mystery slowdowns. The slowdowns do seem to have gotten worse in the past month or so.

Don't mind me, just implementing automatic image hiding and album grouping in my client

All the recent stuff over on Bluesky about them refusing to ban Jesse Singal from the platform, in spite of all the protestations from the trans users that made Bluesky what it is, makes me feel that I was right first time back in 2022: that profit-driven social media is always going to turn out this way, and maybe the Fediverse really is the way ahead for us, despite its many flaws

bluesky rambling, semi-inflated follow numbers

Some real weird following shit going on over at Bluesky. Because of how feeds are integrated centrally into the app, a lot of folks really only scroll through a specific feed rather than their entire following list.

As a result, tons of folks are mass following folks (I'm talking 25k, 60k, 90k people) just to get their own follower numbers up due to some people following back just because.

But in my experience, engagement is much less there than here. I've even seen people with thousands of followers more than me who get little engagement with their posts, have to repost em a few times, etc.

Real weird behavior. Bluesky tires me out sometimes due to this. I've posted before about how it almost feels charged and the energy is so frenetic. Or maybe I just got used to the fediverse and having no company trying to force me to spend as much time as possible on their platform. Idk

@piegames There's one thing I would disagree with there, and that's implicitly equating "traumaqueers" and "toxic people who should be thrown out".

While it's really important to throw out people who have shown no interest in participating in a healthy way, it's equally important to foster and support improvement in those who are merely *unable* to participate in a healthy way, as is often the case with traumatized folks.

You can't build a healthy community by having exclusion as your only moderation tool either.

uhc ceo, politics

you know, for all my flammability, i am not much of an enjoyer of fights. oh no, gee, of course not. it would be so nice if everything was solved over an honest, vulnerable conversation and a cup of green tea. love, peace, candy cones and all that fluff.

but that's for those who actually listen.

you think we hadn't tried?

people did, and then you ignored them, or slandered them, stomped on their throats even harder for even daring to talk.
