This is a graph from a Dutch news article about changes in revenue (blue) and sales volume (red) in the Dutch retail industry. Above 0 means it went up, below 0 means it went down, compared to the previous year. The massive dip in volume are the years in which there were COVID measures.

But I want to draw your attention to the "revenue" line. Notice how it doesn't meaningfully dip compared to previous years, and revenues continued to climb, *even though* the sales volume decreased?

Next time someone tells you that ever-increasing consumerism is necessary to keep the economy running, remember this graph.

(The CBS, which is the data source for this graph, is the Dutch governmental statistics agency.)

Also this time I used an appropriate tool, instead of bedsheets

ableism

It is absurd to expect any one person to have expert or even basic knowledge about every possible topic, in societies as complex and multi-faceted as ours, and it's just as absurd to expect people to have that knowledge in whatever topic happens to be *your* specialty.

In other words: complaining about how "everyone should know the basics of X" or "people are too dumb to understand X" is being an asshole and gatekeeping at best, and most likely you're also being ableist. Cut it out. I don't care what the subject is.

Like, work on making things more accessible and approachable instead?

A lot is going on today: A few colleagues are sawing a yew trunk into boards, while other millers are planing some wood for a customer. I started cleaning and setting saws, as we do not have that many sharp saws left.

We set the saws before sharpening them.

We usually do not sharpen saws when there are visitors in the mill, because the sharpening machine makes a lot of noise.

(Jesse Klaver).

My employer is currently looking for a senior dev doing really complex stuff in and on C++ code. This is in Ottawa (Canada) and not remote.

The product is a niche dev tool. It's not a compiler, but it's that kind of problem space.

If you're interested, please DM me and I'll provide more details. I'm being vague because I don't want to link my work and personal online presences.

FWIW, I genuinely like my co-workers and enjoy this kind of work.

Boosts are okay.

Does anybody know where I could advertise my indie game localization services? Does itch.io have something that would let me do that?

@ifixcoinops (Recommendations on how to fix it Properly, with the understanding that the things available in hardware stores do not match at all what is available in eg. the US, are very welcome! That's where most of the spoons cost goes, figuring that out)

@ifixcoinops Unfortunately repairing it Properly has a spoons cost, so I have patched it up for now with the knowledge that it needs a proper fix soon

Can someone recommend me some hard or semi-hard transhumanist #scifi (preferably prose or webcomic form) that does *not* have a faux-rationalist eugenicsy vibe to it and has a more laid-back and creative attitude regarding posthuman enhancements and so on, while also *not* having a technophobic, conservative attitude that treats the human body and mind as something sacred and untouchable like a lot of sci-fi that touches on these topics?

When scientists name creatures they should have to write a little rhyming limerick using the name so that people know how to pronounce it correctly.

I just did a surprise ballistic uninstallation of a ceiling lamp using a bedsheet, and I promise you that this is not a shitpost😭

hospitals

Neither the times nor quantities are accurate but it seems to have been approximated closely enough by this point that nursing staff can work with it and provide medication at the correct times in the correct quantities

hospitals

Once again finding that hospital IT systems are completely incapable of dealing with medication that is taken on sleep-relative time, not clock time - my medication file at this hospital looks like a battleground by this point, of different hospital staff trying to implement their own IT-system-compatible approximations of what I've told them

"Mozilla Corporation is separate from the Foundation"

Okay but why do you expect me to take that seriously if there's no way for me to interact with Foundation things without also being hit by the Corporation's shit governance? What is this supposed separation actually worth then?
