uspol, green party

Someone should also be putting the Green Party's feet to the fire.

Where the fuck were they the past four years?! As many people pointed out, Jill Stein only shows her face for the presidential elections.

Where.

Were.

You.

Y'all ain't shit.

If you find yourself wondering what you should be doing now, the answer is probably the same as it was yesterday.

The most important thing you can do is build, grow, and participate in your community.

The work happens in kitchens and coffee shops and bookstores and libraries and living rooms and concert halls.

Make friends. Support your friends. Be ready to defend one another if the moment calls for it. Figure out how to get to the other side. Figure out how to slow down. Figure out how to get off the ride. But you're doing it together.

USPol, reminders, kindness (mention of ableist slurs)

It's a very sad, and traumatic, day today no matter which part of the globe you're on.

I'd like to remind people that resorting to slurs, no matter your mood, no matter what's happened, is not okay - don't tread on others in an attempt to elevate yourselves. That's what got us into this mess. Words like 'stupid' and 'idiot' are ableist slurs and are *not* okay.

Be kind. Move to compassion and support. Uplift your comrades.

It's time for my periodic reminder that VPNs do not magically increase security or privacy.

They take your network traffic and deliver it to someone else on your behalf, then deliver the responses back to you. That is all they do. That's what a VPN is.

The only time this helps with privacy is when you don't want your ISP to know where the traffic is going or you don't want the website to know where the traffic is coming from, *but you're okay with the VPN operator knowing*. If your use case does not fit into that very specific description, including the caveat, a VPN will not help you with privacy.

(Inspired by a friend asking me VPN questions this morning, because "everyone was talking about VPNs so I assumed that's a thing we're supposed to be doing now".)

⚡️yup! Today I’m doing my part as a trans elder and witch by teaching you all the most important survival skill of all:

Believing in your ability to make things better for yourself

Not “it gets better.” No fam, it doesn’t “get” better! we *proactively* make it so! And we keep doing that. We have a proven track record

So, new phrase: “you can make it better”

I feel weird recommending Linux to people because it's not just one thing like Windows and MacOS are, it's this huge constellation of software to select from. I think that's a good thing, but if they're not somebody who will just try out a bunch of systems for fun and I say "use Fedora" or "use Kubuntu" I feel like I am making a bunch of important choices for them, or potentially scaring them off if some of those choices aren't ideal for them.

political musing, not elections

I am more and more tending towards a default trust model of "trust everyone, but trust nobody fully"

my friend has now been able to pay their rent on time thanks to y'all, so they asked me to send out a picture of their comfortable cat

uspol, cloudflare

So. It's probably time to bring this up again: Cloudflare is a US-based company with close ties to the US government (law enforcement and intelligence in particular) that currently controls a double-digit percentage of web traffic, and basically strips away the encryption from the connection - in other words, they can see *everything* that is sent through sites that use Cloudflare.

The CEO is also a 4chan-y techbro which has in the past shown support for fascist and harassment websites (not just KF either, also nazi websites).

If there was ever a moment to rip Cloudflare out of the infrastructure for your site or service, that moment is *right now*.

Maybe today is the day to go through your timeline and fulfill a bunch of mutual aid requests.

self-defense tip

DO NOT call random fucking numbers that you see in posts like this with no credentials and no indication of who's running the fucking thing: https://ohai.social/@dramypsyd/113436056126861478

⚡️some cultures wail and sob at the funeral. Some throw a party

Well, make no mistake this is a funeral, but I’m going to pick the latter option

They may think our lives are cheap, but man are they willing to pay a premium trying to end them 🖤

Incredible, apparently the Dutch emergency services and police communication network (C2000) could be jammed by running... a cheap aromatic diffuser from a discount store
