Food crime, non vegan

@VegaHarmonia Ah yes, Dutch cuisine and pre-made sauce bags/jars, name a more iconic duo

@MrBerard@pilote.me Are you looking specifically for those working in institutional education, or educators in general?

(I have a lot of experience with private tutoring sessions for software development, and am neurospicy, but have deliberately avoided institutional education)

like what's even more fucked up is we literally know who Sun Tzu is and cite him directly for Art of War, but not for the mathematics he wrote about during those wars?

and basically nobody knows about Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, the guy who you should be thinking about when talking about all of the incredible mathematics from the Islamic golden ages

algebra and trigonometry being attributed to ancient Arabs is one of the very few cases where we just outright do talk about mathematics not being invented by white people, and it's important to talk more about that

(note: most mathematics was not invented by white people. but we pretend it is)

I think that all of the projects explicitly archiving scientific works are extremely helpful but I also wish these were more projects that just outright listed old published works

like, adequate citation info "author, book, published date, publication, etc." for all works, but without the actual works themselves, since that means it'd be safe from copyright, plus links to other cited works and keywords about what they're about

I know plenty of modern publisher websites will tell you this for modern works but like. I've found more links to relevant papers from David Hilbert, for example (~early 1900's) from old textbooks than I have from any modern scholarly source. and even then, they're all in German and I have to translate them all myself

As an addendum for clarification: for now, I'm going to try and exclude non-white folks from this change (as in, will not unfollow them), and see whether this is enough to bring it down to manageable levels, as they *do* still regularly post things that are actually new to me.

I still would appreciate CWs all the same for the same reasons, but also understand that there are conflicting needs that warrant doing it differently here.

sharing own post on the topic

@pjf I wrote this post a while ago in response to exactly that kind of behaviour, around privacy: gist.github.com/joepie91/6a5f5

(Linking it because I've found it useful to stop that kind of behaviour without having to explain the whole thing every time, and perhaps it will be useful to you too)

Both of these are dangerous.

If we shame others for compromising then they're never going to ask for help. They're going to associate the people pushing back against the culture of scamming as being insufferable jerks.

If we proudly declare we always use the defaults and accept all, then that sends a strong signal that our culture of constant scamming is acceptable. It works even more to ostracise those who may push back against it.

With that in mind, I have two requests for you all. They're hard requests, and I struggle with them both.

One is don't shame people for compromising. Nobody wanted to supply their email address, or click the giant "accept all". They're tired and just wanted to get on with their day.

The other is don't take pride in your complicity. "*I* never have those problems because *I* don't block ads." Great, good for you, but that doesn't help the people who want to preserve their privacy.

I want a game where I can just wander around and find things. do you know one?

@schratze In cases like this, where I think there's a reasonable chance that they don't know about it but they might want to, I usually just ask if they're interested in advice on getting rid of ads completely, for example. And if they say 'no', leave the topic be.

(From experience, a lot of people *don't* know about adblocking, and are happy to learn about it, as long as you don't *assume* they don't know and/or are interested, and aren't pushy about it. And asking "do you want advice" allows them to say "no" without having to provide a reason, which seems to be the main thing that matters to people.)

Apparently the Razr doesn't charge batteries while stuck in bootloader mode. That's okay, I have this modded PSP battery charger that works just fine

@marlies I don't immediately remember your posts as being a problem here (though you're one of the rare few in NL) and honestly I don't actually mind if people slip up sometimes... it's just that some people very obviously just don't care about doing it and/or don't want to bother because they *consistently* do it, those are the folks I'm thinking of mainly.

Will (try to) remember your post though, and let you know if I notice you missing one, thanks :)

My dear lefty accounts: "cabal" is an antisemitic word, and "idiot" is an ableist slur used for eugenics.

I'm sure we won't fight fascism with more White supremacy.

Maybe get more creative and to the point when describing malicious and deathmaking, greedy capitalists?

@rail_ (Of particular note is that the ~30 EUR units you can get at cheap stores tend to produce crappy results)

@rail_ I believe there are still places that will do this for you for a reasonable fee, usually advertised as 'digitization', we even have a photography shop in the town here that'll do it (and basically any other analog media).

Buying equipment yourself is probably not worth it unless you want to do it as a hobby and have a fair amount of rolls to work with, because AFAIK it gets pretty pricey if you want *good* equipment
