@baldur Hm. Doesn't Upwork stand to gain from discouraging LLM use, because their business model is "commissions on outsourced human labour"?

⚠️ crowdfunding PSA ⚠️

FUN FACT: you can post your #MutualAid requests in the #MastodonForHarris hashtag to make sure they'll be seen by people who, apparently, have ludicrous oodles of money to burn. also it's praxis

EDIT: they have now moved to #Mastodon4Harris like with the number 4 instead of "for"

boosts appreciated :boostRequest:

@sindarina Honestly I feel like a big part of the problem here is that you often *can't* actually assume that, particularly if you're not neurotypical, because of the issues around passive aggressive communication and how it can be hard to tell the difference between "<group> sucks" and "<group> sucks, I really am talking about you but it's rude to say so directly" (if you don't know the speaker and their usual style of communication, that is).

This most likely doesn't explain all such cases, but I've definitely seen a lot of cases where this is exactly what happened (confirmed with the people involved afterwards).

So you got cash leftover that you wish to give to a good cause, yeah? Money leftover you don't actually have an intermediate need for, and doesn't affect your own essentials and well being?

Then support folks on #MutualAid, support campaigns that give aid to #Palestine, use your money support #Rojava, to #IndigenousResistance, to resistance fighters in #Myanmar, to help #Armenia, to help #Ukraine. Heck, use your money to support you local community initiatives to help everyone close around you. Send money to that one family member you do know struggles financially.

But for crying out loud, don't donate your cash to the already well off and thriving. The rich don't need your money. #MastodonForHarris is like throwing money into an Scrooge McDucks money vault, already filled to the brim.

There's people on this platform that genuinely are crying out for help. Don't ignore their voices. Help us.

Modern science relies on (open source) software and hardware, but whereas creating tools (writing code) can be turned into academic currency (papers), there is currently no incentive for researchers to provide feedback and improvement suggestions for tools despite how valuable these contributions are to the scientific community as a whole. One possible way forward would be to treat "issue creation" and other Git-based activity as an acceptable form of peer review.

This is an issue and idea I’ve been thinking about for a while. I’d love to flesh it out into an actual set of actionable proposals/suggestions, as well as figuring out which (technological) hurdles would need to be overcome, in a opinion-styled paper - could anyone be interested in working on this together with me?

Please share!

PSA: UK immigration, indefinite leave to remain

We recently learned about the UK's new eVisa system; since official communications on the topic seem kinda non-existent, I wanted to raise awareness.

If you're in the UK on indefinite leave to remain, but *don't* already have a biometric residence permit, you'll need a BRP before you can be transitioned over to the new eVisa system in early 2025.

They recommend applying for a BRP *as soon as possible*, since it can take up to 6 months to process.

#MastodonForHarris be like: "Let's support one of the most well funded and richest people in the world, while ignoring all the folks who genuinely need help on this platform, and doesn't get help they need from a country that social welfare is basically non-existent. They're just 'lazy' and 'attention seekers!'"

SAG-AFTRA is going on strike again.

[SAG-AFTRA] is calling a work stoppage against the major video game companies after nearly two years of trying to renegotiate its Interactive Media Agreement. The strike goes into effect July 26.

tangent, re: adventures in game development

@bram I'm using npmjs.com/package/@kmamal/sdl and npmjs.com/package/@kmamal/gl, in case you're curious - they seem to be the only maintained and up-to-date bindings :p

tangent, re: adventures in game development

@bram (This is mainly because I'm not really comfortable shipping a vendored copy of something as complex as a browser engine for a game, which is relatively unlikely to get timely updates)

tangent, re: adventures in game development

@bram Right, and I know there's a bunch of games that ship an Electron, but those crucially are all Chromiums/Webkits of some sort; instead I'm directly using SDL and OpenGL from Node, there's no browser engine involved at any point

military mention, talking about bags, caps, making things queer looking, long-ish

Ok. I just stumbled upon the details of those webbing strips that are on military and paramilitary gear.
It looks super functional for organizing gear.. but the only way to get it is to get icky looking bags that have all been made in "tactical" colours.

THIS SHIT COULD BE IN RAINBOWS, EASY.

I'm officially putting this style of bag on my to-make list, but I know that it'll be a while before I can even start.

If you like making bags, particularly if you make/sell bags, I'm handing this idea off to anyone who wants to run with it.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pouch_At

It's just webbing on a bag in particular spacing! You can get webbing in practically any damned colour you like, and I think that it'd be fun to have "Queer P.A.L.S" gear. (other related search terms- MOLLE, which stands for Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment)

Can someone make this stuff gay and flashy, instead of mean and fashy the way all the existing stuff looks? Anyone who wants a practical modular bag system can't even get it in a decently bright colour as of now.
