Dat was een tamelijk trieste vertoning, gisterenmiddag 17 maart 2024 in Den Haag: de demonstratie Geef Haat Geen Macht. De omvang was miniem. De aanpak precies verkeerd, de bepaald ook vrij treurig. Aan de aanwezige demonstranten lag het niet, die deden hun best en lieten zich horen. Maar wie denkt dat we met de aanpak van degenen die deze demonstratie op touw hebben gezet, echt een sterke antifascistische beweging opbouwen die gewicht in de schaal legt tegen de dreiging van een fascistenkabinet, mag daar nog eens heel goed over nadenken.

Nieuwe acties komen er intussen aan! Pegida wil op 23 maart in Arnhem weer een Koran-verbranding proberen. Daar hoort actief verhinderd te worden. En transhaters gaan op 26 maar weer hun giftige ding doen op in Utrecht. Dat hoort minstens luidruchtig overschreeuwd te worden.

Nieuwe initiatieven tegen de fascistendreiging op regeringsniveau, zijn echter ook nodig. Graag betere dan de vertoning van gisteren. Graag zonder lange sprekerslijst en uitzichtloze demonstratieroutes. We kunnen echt beter, en de tijden vereisen het.

I used to rule out my involvement in projects that are themselves commercial, because it always ends up being labour exploitation and shady business tactics.
With every passing day, and every 'big tent' software project experience, I am more and more seriously considering only ever getting involved in projects that explicitly commit to being anti-capitalist.
So often they just end up becoming the same thing as commercial projects, just with a layer of indirection...

I mean not too long ago it'd take the whole night to charge a phone to full and now it's like "Oh my phone is kinda low and I have to get going soon. I guess I'll plug it in for like 15 min" and then in that time it somehow charges by like 30% what on earth how

If your company is "improving the world" or "helping artists" or whatever grand goal, then why is it not a non-profit, or a co-op, or something similar?
Unless the goal isn't actually to be altruistic and it's just a cover to make money
tech, ethics, internal conflict
An internal conflict that I haven't found an answer to yet, is how any sort of 'universal solution' in tech, however alluring it is on the surface, is fundamentally incompatible with ethical boundaries.
"Packaging everything" means also packaging software that kills people.
"Interoperating with everything" means also interoperating with systems run by bigots for the purpose of harming others.
"Works for everyone" means it also works for oppressors who wish to use it to oppress others.
At the same time, there are good ethical reasons to aim for universality (and do it properly): it increases the chances that your thing will work for (marginalized) people who you might not even be aware exist, and who are constantly left out in the cold by the assumptions made by most systems.

Like, yeah, it's true that the tech doesn't really work. But that's... really not the main problem with it? You're actually going to have to engage on the topic of exploitation to get the point across, there are no shortcuts here

The problem with arguing against LLMs like ChatGPT purely on the basis that they "don't work", is that it might *seem* like an easier argument to convince people, but in practice you've just specified the threshold of workingness at which exploitation is acceptable

If you really knew where the problem was, then you would likely already have found it. And to be clear, there's nothing wrong with needing help to find an error, but you *do* need to acknowledge that that limits your ability to determine relevancy of different parts of the code, and leave that job to whoever is helping you with it!
