As I watch X openly support Nazis, Google search displaying explicitly incorrect information and misinformation, and the continued march towards a lack of foresight or accountability in tech I must reiterate that technology is and forever will be a political force.

(Does MusicBrainz have the same sort of coverage of obscure records, though?)

@elilla For dedicated servers, it's under the "admin login" tab in the server details

The secondary admin account only has limited permissions though, iirc, and you can only create one

Maybe some of my followers can help me with this #question.

I remember reading about Chinese diaspora labour organisations, some sort of mutual aid society type thing, or proto-unions. However, though I remember they had a name, I forgot what it was and I'm finding it impossible to google for it. Anyone knows?

@tommythorn @darkling @NanoRaptor An ex-cofounder of mine from a previous company had his house catch fire.

Including a server containing a ton of irreplaceable data belonging to a client that was super paranoid and had an NDA clause mandating all data be stored on premises (his house since it was a tiny startup).

Luckily he had fiber with fast upload.

The client ssh'd *into the burning building* and managed to save most of the data before power was lost. Talk about a close save.

Love this toothpaste label - let's roll it out across all products

@cody Sort of gender-dependent? Specifically mostly attracted to ambiguous-gendered/ungendered folks.

Just a small little $2,000,000,000 they will make it for you!

hoe ijs meteen in damp omgezet wordt, dat vind ik subliem.

I absolutely do NOT fuck around with lead. It's one of those things where there is no safe level of exposure.

Radiation, asbestos, radon, carbon monoxide, your body can handle amounts of. Limited exposure. Lead just grabs you by the red blood cells and doesn't let go.

Makers of the Stanley mug say "lead is used in the manufacturing process, but the product needs to be damaged in order to expose the lead."

yeah good thing people don't ever have favorite coffee mugs that they use for years even though they're beat to shit.

I only recently got rid of this travel mug I'd had for about 25 years

I never want to get to a point where I have to turn down random meetings with people asking for help with stuff. I take a meeting or two a week thats just like "how do I do this thing" or "how are you thinking about this" and they are often my favorite part of the (work) week. I have seen people on here host "open office hours" in a more structured way where they set aside an hour or two just for helping ppl with stuff, and I love that.

Thats one of those big hidden harms of overworked profs having to tend grants all the time, all that accumulated wisdom and no time to share it.

Minecraft mod idea: an industrial/tech mod, except instead of setting up a processing pipeline for virgin resources, you need to scavenge for garbage and ruins, and set up a sorting/processing/recycling pipeline, with similar complexity to existing tech/materials mods - with resources balanced such that it's more interesting than just mining virgin resources

For many years, DSL/Cable routers by German company AVM, sold under the Fritz!Box brand, did some internal dns tweaking so that when you typed in fritz.box it would lead you to the config page of the router in your network. Now, years later, there actually is a .box TLD (Top Level Domain) and AVM forgot to register the fritz.box domain. Someone else did. And activated Certificate Pinning (HSTS). #Oops

UPDATE 2024-01-27: Their dns entries are flaky ATM, sometimes there, mostly not.

transphobia, psychology

Suspiciously many transphobic people exhibit signs of unacknowledged agender-ness, and I can't help but feel like this is at least part of what fuels the rhetoric and assumptions underlying it

Some of the most recognizable artwork on the internet is by the comic XKCD.
(Its a science, math, tech and general STEM comic which can be humorous and poignant.)

XKCD is made with stick figures, graphs, text and simple illustrations. But people love it to the point where professionals cite it, people have stickers and mugs (etc) of it.

Your creativity doesn't have to look like a realistic painting to be valid. And I think thats a HUGE misconception.

anti consumerism was the perfect false consciousness philosophy for the '90s. It blames the victim, doesn't identify any actual problems or malefactors and sheds no understanding on anything
