tech monopolies have got such a death grip on social spaces and indeed the concept of socialisation itself that people are always surprised when they see a space not driven by capitalist interests and see how different it is.
yes i am talking about VRChat vs. the Metaverse, thanks to Dan Olson and PeopleMakeGames
I want to thank everyone here so much for the outpouring of support that @zillanovikov , @martennorr and I have received in response to Amazon taking down the Sad Bastard Cookbook. Several different people and bots are now reviewing our case, and we hope it will be back up soon.
Just wanted to share the fantastic email that Zilla received from a massive company worth over a trillion dollars. I hope y'all enjoy it as much as we did.
hey fedi. i have a favour to ask you all …
diaspora.im is a glitch-soc (mastodon fork/activity pub) server for nonwhite folks. the goal was to create another option for us that is nonwhite-managed so that we can express ourselves how we want without the white gaze making it hard to do so. the fedi is chock full of white-managed instances and i see soooo many of us disenchanted and downright disgusted with how our words get removed and censored when we speak our truths.
when i started diaspora.im, it was never to “have my own space” because i already had that. but as i sat around chatting with folks on the fedi, it became increasingly obvious that my privilege in having my own space was unique… i wanted that for the rest of us nonwhite folk who don’t have that privilege. i wanted a place we could call our own. i wanted a space that was as comfy and safe as my own one-person server. i wanted that for us.
thing is, i don’t work so paying for this server is out of my pocket with the help of you all. we have a couple regular supporters right now, but i’d really like to see us make about $100 a month to cover server costs and to pay our moderator a stipend. right now, we’re doing about US$75 so just another $25 a month would put us right where we need to be.
so i am asking you … if you have an extra dollar a month, consider donating to us. we’d really appreciate it.
someone linked to this project earlier, and i lost the post and can't find it again
anyway: traditional GPS trackers use a lot of battery. getting a GPS fix takes a long time, and it needs to remember the almanac and do a lot of math and stuff like that.
what this project does is eliminate the "getting a fix" part of it. the board samples the GPS constellation in only 12 ms (!!). the samples can then be post-processed to determine the time and location.
re: cursed computer
@max You know what, I would not even be surprised anymore by this point
cursed computer
I was running a game under WINE, and it hung while my mouse was captured, so I tried killing wineserver from a terminal to get my mouse back.
This somehow resulted in my entire systemd user slice terminating, which left me staring at my display manager's background with no way to get back into a session. It also somehow segfaulted an Electron in the process.
I swear I have normal computer problems.
In the process of moving to @joepie91. This account will stay active for the foreseeable future! But please also follow the other one.
