racist rhetoric, re: LLM grumbling
Imagine believing that "they are just not capable of starting tech companies" is the reason that folks in the global South are getting exploited, jesus christ

re: LLM grumbling
Like, if your first response to being told about the exploitative nature of it is to make colonialist jokes, then uhhh I don't know what to tell you, but you might be part of the problem here
"Why don't people want to pay for streaming anymore?" cry the companies who split streaming into 40 different services that keep increasing in cost while randomly removing content without warning, and shoving ads into our paid services.
Yup, sure is a mystery. A real head scratcher.
Claudine Gay
If you run across claims about Claudine Gay, be very wary; by all appearances this seems to be another wave of racist harassment disguised as criticism, from all of the usual right-wing pundits who Suddenly(tm) care about academic integrity now that it's a Black woman they can point their anger towards
(Like how nobody except said right-wing pundits seem to believe that any plagiarism actually happened, not even the authors in question whose work was supposedly 'plagiarized')
WaPo has an article, I wouldn't exactly call it excellent, but it does at least provide a lot of context for what's going on: https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2023/12/15/harvard-president-claudine-gay-race-criticism/
I wonder if the "you can't say anything anymore" crowd would like to hear some of the things that I can't say to privileged tech dudes without them exploding in a ball of anger
Such controversial statements as, for example, "you are violating a boundary", "you hold racist beliefs even if you don't realize it", or "building tech does actually come with an ethical responsibility"
Something tells me that that's not what this crowd is talking about, though, when they complain that "you can't say anything anymore"
The reason why QR Code generators can charge you up the ass for a fucking JPEG is because the image they generate is not a direct link to your page, but in fact a redirect link going through their servers. So they can limit traffic however they want. That's the scam
PSA: If you're using a self-hosted #Gitea, you may wish to migrate to #Forgejo instead, it is a drop-in replacement.
Gitea started down the enshittification path, and is now open core: it has features available in Gitea Cloud that aren't in the open source version. I know of at least one such feature: a user quota, which limits how many users a Gitea instance can have.
That's something required by their pricing model, but it's also something that would be interesting for self-hosted instances in the long run too: once Forges federate, a user quota on an instance with open registration would make it much easier to run a small forge.
Who knows what other changes there may be? Just say no to open core, and use #Forgejo.
@helle (It wouldn't even have been a new thing to build, MCH2022 already had this kind of monitoring...)
@helle From what I've heard about the way that COVID safety measures were approached internally by some orga, the reason seems likely to be "having air quality graphs would mean acknowledging that this is our responsibility"
There's apparently been resistance to even the most basic safety measures to a degree that I find it difficult to believe it was just overlooked or 'too much work'
I wonder why #37c3 doesn't have an indoor weather network. We get nice graphs for c3noc, but I want CO2, PM10, RH% and °C. Would help people with COVID-19 awareness and how mediocre the ventilation here at CCH really is.
Can we at least get this like next year, as COVID-19 won't be gone.
The most insidious thing about racism on Mastodon is how it is done in such a way that the majority-white user base never sees it. I don't think that it's simply a matter of white people not seeing what they don't want to see - at least in the vast majority of cases.
So when a non-white person discusses the racism they see as a user of Mastodon, it must feel like gaslighting when white people respond with "What do you mean? I've not seen anything like that here."
re: geklaag over journalisme, drugsproductie
