Also: this COVID safety presentation is maybe the best I've ever seen.
It's a fairly comprehensive guide for people who aren't as into the research as we are, and has none of the bad/false info you get from public health sources.
If we could replace every public health COVID guide with this, it would be a huge improvement.

also fediverse meta
it's telling that in all the discussion of Threads federating with activitypub I've yet to see any "but will Threads implement CWs?" or "Threads users will never respect our use of CWs" toots, which are generally the low hanging fruit of fedimeta when discussing a new integration.
that's because this isn't just another new integration. this is a breakpoint.
@CaribenxMarciaX mmhmm, I'm seeing a lot of such takes and it's disconcerting to see how little people have apparently learned from years and years of exploitative tech companies doing their thing: and how little work the tech companies have to do in PR terms, because people are going round doing the work for them, FOR FREE
This is clown logic, sorry not sorry
We're here *because* it is not Meta
I would say that #37c3 could probably learn some things from @CovidSafeFurs..
We call on both cons and attendees to do more to protect those in the furry fandom who are particularly susceptible to severe outcomes from Covid. Many furries fall under this category, and they deserve to participate in our community without having their health be endangered.
Large gatherings like conventions are inherently risky, and it is not possible to completely eliminate risk. However, we have tools such as masks, tests, and vaccines that can lower the risk and make it safer for members of vulnerable populations to attend.
If we have the tools, the right thing to do is to use them. It is not inclusive or just to leave vulnerable populations to fend for themselves. A collective commitment to Covid safety is the best way to ensure that all members of our community are able to participate.
#Fediblock mastodon.social for federating with threads.net who is a known propagator of hatespeech
politiegeweld, taser
Threads, ranting (--)
In disagreement with the take that there's nothing to do about Threads.
Right now Facebook gets a lot of power out of saying "You consented to this," because it's an open protocol and by default Masto will federate with them.
There is a solution to the technical problem, which is to block federation with threads.net. Then Facebook has to at least admit they're doing this without consent.
That's the tech problem. There's also a people problem.
I think that Threads users don't benefit much from being connected to me, but they want things that are totally inconsistent with my happiness. So I see them as purely taking from Masto as it exists.
I think infosec.exchange's stance of "we won't decide for you if we federate with Threads" is completely inadequate in the face of this problem because Facebook is introducing a giant coalition of which, presumably, many will want voting rights.
I can't see an outcome where people who oppose Facebook aren't marginalized off the instance by a massive, semi-astroturfed coalition of people who think Zuck should have another private beach. The members of this coalition will be a mixture of Threads.net users and infosec.exchange users who have realized they like some Threads users.
I expect this to be the outcome for Hachyderm too.
My goal is (1) to make it technically possible to express nonconsent to this in an unambiguous way (2) to create implicit social threat against joining the coalition Facebook is trying to create.
Specifically, I want to support this in cases where there aren't instance-level blocks on Threads. This is likely to happen a lot in cases where Threads bribes instance admins with money or promises of power.
I do not know if this will work. But I hope something does.
abuse, NixOS
Okay, I'm just going to say it: the #NixOS community has an abuser problem.
I don't mean that it's *full* of abusers - most of the NixOS community that I've interacted with has been excellent! That's not the problem.
The problem is that there is a handful of people in the community, some of them in positions of power, who have been showing openly abusive behaviour for years now, with effectively no consequences - because they are the kind of abuser who uses 'civil' words.
This came to a head two days ago when one of them decided to run a deliberate experiment on my emotional state without my consent in a governance discussion, giving me an anxiety attack at 4am, but that is only the most obvious recent incident and not the first one.
That same person, and a number of others, have been concern-trolling every single moderation, CoC, governance and policy discussion to death for years (perhaps the most infamous example is RFC 98). They've been making patronizing comments towards lots of folks who are just trying to improve things a bit.
They've been going "oh but we shouldn't call fascism bad, that's polarizing". They've been trivializing very real problems that (particularly marginalized) folks are experiencing. They've been disrupting constructive governance conversations with bad-faith arguing.
I've been trying to resolve this problem privately for years now, but not enough is happening and I'm running out of patience, so perhaps it's time to call this out publicly. I'm withholding names for now, but if this doesn't get resolved on a community/moderation level, I might change my mind on that.
@ianbetteridge Yes, thank you, I know what companies claim the analytics are for, and I also know how they are actually used. I am telling you that that is the part that people have a problem with.
threads transphobia
the entire threads situation reminds me of this one time where me and my friends used to party together with this friend we used to have that was really toxic and later started inviting his friends who were bigoted to me and others and didn't care. and one time we threw a party without him because we got tired of his bs and he comes along and says 'why didn't u invite me, you have to' dude last time you came you wrecked the place and your buddy lev called me a tranny fuck off
We have an utterly fucked up idea of what counts as technology. Something that projects many of our biases including gender, and race.
To many these days it's only technology if it's electronic, and used by western men. But to take such a narrow definition is to ignore the amazing technology that surrounds us, and upon which our society is built. As such. It's time for a thread. I'm gonna talk about two different items you use every day, and the technology that goes into them.

We are Covid Safe Furs, a group of furries supporting each other and advocating for Covid safety and inclusivity within the furry fandom. We believe that through education and solidarity, we can help keep each other safe and make furry a more inclusive place for all.
I am Yatchi, and I started Covid Safe Furs at the beginning of 2023 because, as I started going back to in-person events, I noticed that I wasn't the only fur wearing a mask and taking precautions. Covid has remained a top-of-mind concern for many of us within the fandom.
I realized there were many furs just as passionate about Covid safety and inclusivity as me, and I thought it'd be great if we got together to say:
You are not alone!
Your comfort and safety matter!
You have a place here within the furry fandom!
We began attending cons where we hosted educational panels on Covid safety and handed out free N95 masks and rapid tests. You may have seen us at #GoldenStateFurCon, @lasvegasfurcon, or @blfc this year, and we'll be at #AnthroNorthWest in the new year!
We love seeing all our friends at cons and events, and we also believe we can have fun while still keeping ourselves safe. We do not judge or dictate the behavior of others, but we do want to make sure you have the knowledge and tools you need to make informed decisions.
Here are the PDF slides from our most recent #BLFC2023 panel, hosted by Yatchi and Junius, and jam-packed with the most important, up-to-date, and practical information you need to know about Covid to protect yourself and others. https://covidsafefurs.org/Covid%20Safe%20Furs%20@%20BLFC%202023.pdf
If you've ever wondered
- What kind of mask should I bring to a con?
- How can I evaluate the safety of a crowded space?
- If I'm hosting a room party, is there anything I can do to make it safer?
- Can I wear a mask while fursuiting?
We have answers to these and more!
If you're looking for a supportive group of Covid-conscious furries, come join our Telegram chat at http://covidsafefurs.org/telegram! We're here to share information, answer questions, collaborate on projects, and simply be there to support each other.
For more resources and information on our events, visit our website at http://covidsafefurs.org. And if you'd like to help out with art, writing, web design, panels, or anything else, we'd love to hear from you! Together we can help make furry safer and more inclusive for all.
In the process of moving to @joepie91. This account will stay active for the foreseeable future! But please also follow the other one.

Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
