i find the concept of divorce lawyers quite amusing because it means that the only things that are capable of undoing your marriage are death or a special little boy with a law degree. till death or some dude do us part

grumping, re: subposting techfolks on grifthub

@clarfonthey Back when Github introduced this feature, I repeatedly expressed my concern in many places that this would result in mobbing behaviour, because "thumbs down" is a purely emotional response that conveys no constructive information.

Almost every single person laughed at this, "nah that's not gonna happen", and look at where we are now...

subtoot, reference to abusers as a category

Sometimes you interact with people and just every single line that comes out of their mouth reinforces your suspicions of them having an abuser mindset...

Scientists will be like "results should be replicable!" but then do all their experiments with a random walk of homebrew code that runs on four computers networked with a nest of BNC cables, each with a different version of MATLAB, and after every experiment the data is saved by walking a flash drive around to each of them since they cant be connected to the internet because one of them still runs Windows XP and if the rest so much as heard of a software update the work of 5 grad students whose whole PhD was spent setting up this monstrosity would be ruined forever.

Is it feasible to identify the fault in a dead motherboard myself with a fairly basic multimeter and some patience?

My mobo died last week and I had to replace it. I couldn't see anything obviously blown, but for my own curiosity I'd quite like to know what failed, especially if it's something I could reduce the risk of in the future (like reducing ingress of pet hair into the chassis... 😅)

re: hot take, "open core"

@freakazoid I know that, you know that, a lot of "open core" defenders unfortunately do not

sort of an answer

@jonny Disclaimer: I do not have an answer that is *specific to* this situation, so I'm drawing from general 'community management' practices here.

Going off the general question of "what attracts the intended target demographic", if I had to do this, I would probably focus as much as legally allowed on "here is what accommodations and safeguards we provide [that are of unspoken specific interest to these people, and likely to scare off toxic dudes]".

It doesn't *prevent* anyone from applying (so I expect that it wouldn't run afoul of legislation, but I am not a lawyer), but it does clearly communicate that there is a culture which is friendly towards the intended demographic, and hostile towards the "discrimination doesn't exist" folk, which is likely to include most men, which results in self-selection.

If someone who does massage is called a masseuse, why don't we call someone who does sabotage a saboteuse?

covid

If your workplace is doing the "we comply with CDC recommendations" :flan_evil: thing, the CDC director just flatly instructed everyone to:

get covid, flu and RSV (for the over 60s) vaccinations (all three + pneumonia are increasing)
avoid people who are sick
wash hands
improve ventilation
wear a mask
stay home if you're sick and go and get tested so you know what you have and can seek treatment

I would like credit for not just screaming my favorites from the list or using profanity, thank you. :grrnoble:

@nebulos On that note, this seems like a guaranteed GDPR violation. Wonder if anyone's gonna enforce.

I'd be lying if I said I saw this coming three years ago. Everything you posted publicly on facebook and instagram is fair game, and has been used, to train an generative AI.

If you ever needed a reason to quit corporate social media.

Looking into the inside of a USB-A plug to see if it's got the USB 3.0 contacts, like I'm inspecting a horse's teeth.

hot take, "open core"

"Single sign-on is an Enterprise feature" only holds up when you believe that large-scale collaboration is beholden to corporations, and FOSS is only for unserious single-person projects - it is *not*, in fact, a reasonable stance to take on a supposedly open-source project

The next day, there was another human in the house, shouting and pointing to scratch marks on the walls and threatening to throw the cat and her human out.

The cat snuck up behind the intruder and perked her ears at her human.

The human caught her eyes. 'Yes, Satan. Today.'

The cat smiled, too widely and with too many teeth, and looked down at the intruder from her full height.

She pounced.

The cat pounced with claws extended upon her unsuspecting human's bare feet.

'Ouch!' the human cried. 'Not today, Satan!'

The cat's enlarged pupils shrank, and her excited wiggle stilled. She slunk away.

The next day, she frolicked among the ripped-up pieces of the curtain she'd dragged from the rails when her human scooped her up. 'Not today, Satan,' the human said wearily.

@virtulis Amended idea: enclosed space with *two* cat flaps, on opposite sides. That should make it difficult for a single cat to claim and defend as a private space.

It's getting on that time again - remember that a lot of people have issues around holidays, particularly compulsory holidays and family-associated holidays, and Christmas is one of those holidays.

Content warnings *would* be helpful.

Thank you.
