@VeryBadLlama I was reminded very strongly of this one I just saw the other day:

re: 37c3 ticket presale rant, ableism

@polygon Yeah, I decided not to go this year for that reason :/

Looking for suggestions for a new personal domain name, that will (among other things) host my blog, something that doesn't include my nickname or variations thereof and is a little more colourful

re: 37c3 ticket presale rant, ableism

@polygon Not surprising unfortunately, in light of their (complete lack of) COVID mitigations...

37c3 ticket presale rant, ableism

I'm out. Fuck this.
#37c3

@twoolie I have already told you exactly where the exploitation happens, and it's trivial to find the remaining documentation on eg. the exploitation of Kenyans involved. That you don't want to hear it is not my problem.

Also, get out of here with this "technology is neutral" rhetoric.

@twoolie Many of these "open-source datasets" are scraped non-consentually. The ones that aren't, result in useless LLMs because there isn't enough training data - people have tried.

So yes, it *does* immediately make them unethical, when *in practice* it is impossible to ethically acquire sufficient training material to make the technology work.

Tabby is trained on non-consentually collected data.

Feeling very 2016 as today is our 24th of june 2016 and our 9th of november 2016 all rolled into one. Both disastrous results are 7 years ago and haven’t turned out great. You’d think we wouldn’t make the same mistake. But we did and now we have to go through the same pain we saw the folks in America and Britain go through. We weren’t the first western nation to fuck up like this but I hope we’re the last.

We're all just collectively cool with racialized torture, colonial-type exploitation, boiling the oceans and diverting water from actual need by human people so that we can have repetitive tasks accomplished, but shittier?

So did anyone ever do anything about the Kenyan workers that they're torturing for $2 per day to make LLM's work, or is that still happening?

@twoolie @pi_crew@chaos.social There is no such thing as "local-only LLMs".

LLMs (it's in the name!) by their nature are trained on an input corpus so large that you cannot really acquire it through ethical means, let alone train it entirely locally. The technology simply cannot work with that little input data.

(That doesn't mean that local-only *autocompletion* cannot be a thing, but that wouldn't be an LLM.)

so how about that Niagara Falls border crossing incident today, huh

@jonny Kinda seems like oxigraph is trying to be that, though that's RDF-specific I guess

re: ND relationships, 'friendship decay', advice :boost_requested:

@ellie Yep, a familiar issue... discussing this phenomenon with people explicitly has helped a lot for me there, though, to prevent that from happening
