re: CW meta

@jfhbrook No worries. I don't have any documentation handy for the iPhone app unfortunately (only gist.github.com/joepie91/f924e), but if you post a post then there might be other people who can help with that!

CW meta

@jfhbrook Regarding the CW thing, I can't find the toot I wanted to link so I'll try my best to summarize it myself instead, though it'll probably be a bit blunter because I'm pretty exhausted after the past week+.

Basically, this space was built by vulnerable folks on a foundation of consent (ie. not as a Twitter replacement), and that is what CWs are about - it's a way to give other folks control over when and on what terms they interact with content that may be distressing, exhausting, or otherwise unpleasant to them.

They're important even if people don't directly follow you because your toots will also end up on the federated/local timelines, in hashtag searches, and so on. Likewise, many people won't boost toots that don't use appropriate CWs, because it will push them in people's faces who might not want to deal with them right then.

I realize that this is different than you might be used to from other platforms, but there's a good reason why those conventions exist here, and the way people actually interact with them is very different from what newcomers often assume (eg. it doesn't "reduce engagement").

Bottom line: please do use them generously, it's part of what makes fedi so nice. Nobody's expecting you to use them perfectly, of course, but it *is* generally expected that you try your best.

This article explains more about the background behind it and other practices on fedi, and what things are currently like from the perspective of folks (me included) who were here before the Twitter influx: hughrundle.net/home-invasion/

@jfhbrook You can make all CWs auto-expand from the settings (or expand single threads with the eye icon in the corner)

Someone on Tumblr's marketing team is absolutely on fire at the moment.

meta, joke

Fedi has the biggest marketing budget in the history of federated systems: 44 billion dollars

@rune (I still haven't gotten over "holy shit, flowcharts actually work")

@rune Judging from my experience with the "stop using JWT for sessions" article I wrote, that's probably not the worst idea.

Half the internet kept bringing up "counterarguments" that were already addressed *in the article they were commenting on*.

The moment I published a follow-up with a flowchart (yes, a real one), all that dried up overnight.

Being a woman in STEM

Today was exhausting.

I asked someone to run a test on some data for me and the response was to assume I didn't know what I was talking about. This is not the first time this person has done this, they are constantly speaking down to me about science. I see how they treat colleagues that are men, and it's completely different from how they treat women.

So anyways, I'm looking for more #WomenInSTEM to connect with here! 🔭🧑‍🔬

No Pants November but I’m just staying in bed under the covers rather than putting on my leggings (send breakfast)

Hiep hiep hoera, we bestaan alweer 5 jaar. Om het te vieren hebben wij vlaai gehaald voor op de space. #hackerspaces

imo all concerts should have a conductor
imagine the gecs show but theres a guy on stage going ham with the wand

Hello again, #fediverse! We used to have an account at @revspace@mstdn.io but that has been dormant for a few years. We're back, and of course now joining the brand new HSNL (Hackerspaces Netherlands) server.
