@nolan It's worth noting that these really seem to be performance issues contained to specific (overloaded) instances; this instance doesn't have open signups, and I've pretty much not seen any performance degradation on this end, which suggests that it's not a "cascade" across the network at least.

Please do not ask marginalised people to do the work of teaching you how to be a better ally, especially if that's not explicitly their job or business. Some of us may choose to do it, but it's on our own terms, not something to be demanded of us just by virtue of existing.

There are more than enough resources out there for you to learn on your own. Plenty you can observe. You don't need us hand-holding you through your every misstep. We've got our own things to do!

"Please teach us because the only way we can learn is if you tell us where we got it wrong" is not reasonable.

the non-binary condition is having to look up which side of the non-binary flag is up literally every time

meta

@larand What I'm most concerned about are macro-level changes, honestly. There's been a ton of new folks pushing the idea that "defederating is bad", and likewise trying to wear down the moderation policies on existing instances. Both are threats to federation as a defense mechanism :/

"Defederate instances that platform fascists" very much includes cops.

meta

@larand I've certainly been trying, but I'm rapidly running out of energy and patience, and I don't think I'm the only one either...

Unfortunately many of the newcomers (including those who should know better) don't seem willing to do the work of "lurking quietly for a while to get a sense of how things work before claiming that things should change" that I did when I joined here (as did many others, of course).

Like, I'm happy for new folks to find a place here, but not if it threatens the safety of existing communities :/

meta, frustrated

It would be nice if some of the privileged tech folks coming to fedi would realize that their behaviour is on the "threat" side of "the fediverse is designed to protect vulnerable folks against threats"

Research on Fedi

Are you on an academic/scholarly/sciencey Fedi server?

Does your server have a policy regarding researching its users?

This is Scholar's, for example:

scholar.social/terms#research

We should be having this conversation about user consent, expectations and instance policies *now* before you end up having to explain why your cool cool paper about Fedi is getting retracted

Anyway

This sounds like snark but it's not

If you're on mastodon dot social or dot online

Leave that instance and get on a better one

They are de facto unmoderated instances due to their sheer size and many many instances have them limited

So for example, if someone from m dot s replies to this, I won't see it

Ever!

attention new peeps

welcome to mastodon, which is part of the wider fediverse

this place was built by marginalized communities coming together and deciding they were done with the bullshit on twitter

and trying to forge a more comfy space free from corporate influence

queers, furries, neurodivergent peeps, etc. built this place

we generally don't like cops, corps, landlords, and the like

i hope if it isn't immediately clear why, it becomes more so over time

and we hope you enjoy yourself!

meta cw personal

@scanlime On politics: I've noticed in my time here that I open almost every politics-related post that's CW'ed as such... but un-CW'ed politics posts consistently cause a stress response. That small courtesy make such a big difference.

I just want to make this one thing clear for all the new folks sending follow requests right now

There is no such thing as a good cop

Even if they're part of the absolute minority that joined the police force with good intentions, they still chose to become part of an institution with a long history racism, arbitrary violence against minorities, and an uncompromising agenda of suppressing the right of workers in favour of the interests of capital. Hanlon's Razor does not apply to the police

Policing does not reduce crime, social workers, decriminalisation of psychoactive substances, and a strong welfare state do

That's all for now, Souvka out

Fedi meta

@rune Would probably save folks a lot of migrations if we just rebranded one of the right-winger instances to a cop instance, given the significant overlap

All the folks down at handwringing dot social and pearlclutchers dot online who left Scholar are gonna kick themselves when they find out that Scholar has a "no cops" policy that they didn't even have a meltdown over while they were here

Hey if you put together a space that is cop-friendly

You just built a queer-hostile space

@ajroach42 @nolan

where eternal september discourse is bad: elitism, snobbery, privilege, antidemocratic impulses.

where eternal september discourse identifies real problem moments even if it mislocates the causes: scale is poison.

there's good food for thought in both pieces, i think.

❌ we should have daylight when we go to work in the morning

❌ we should have daylight when we come home from work at night

☑️ we shouldn’t have to work so many hours that we have to ration The Sun

I love how I can zone out for a day and miss the creation and solution of a fediverse-wide problem

@ben @phoe The asshat in question seemed very surprised by the swift ejection from the community, too
