im running out of funnies to @ forestbot with so quick, how do reply guys do it

Basically I always give the side-eye to massive instances for the following reasons:

1. Unless they are extremely well organized (like, professionally organized), they just can't do moderation properly; the numbers don't add up. It's irresponsible to create a space you can't safely moderate.

2. I wonder where they're getting the money to run servers that can handle that much traffic.

3. They usually use something like Cloudflare or some other CDN, which is a privacy/censorship nightmare.

4. Unless someone is running an absolute beast of a homeserver, they're likely hosted on Google/Amazon/Microsoft cloud servers, and are therefore giving a chunk of money to those shitty corporations.

mh~

on one hand i can literally point to ways in which the season made things worse, but somehow i felt it'd be way worse?

that's half of my last vacation day wasted in bed, time to waste the other half as well

Addressing a crowd as "friends foes and lovers yet to be"

Back on the subject of federated moderation (masto) versus centralized (insta):

While I do believe the federated model is better in terms of a higher concentration of admins, and more personal and friendly moderation, there are other issues with it:

1. No formalized system for discussing issues with other admins (both intra- and inter-instance) and resolving things in a measured and sensible way.

2. Scuffles between different instance admins who see themselves as being on opposing sides rather than as peers/colleagues.

3. Zero accountability or review process for admins who make questionable decisions.

4. The killswitch for an instance is ultimately in the admin's hands: if they pull the plug, it's over. That's a lot of responsibility.

Not sure how to resolve these issues. Thoughts?

"tech people can't solve anything writing code"
so who writes the online organization tools and the safe e2e messengers?

at this rate I'll have to write my own bot that just takes the @forestbot@hellsite.site posts and replaces random emoji with foxes

just got visited by the spoon killer, how will i clean my desk now, or do literally anything else

sleeping schedules are a scam anyways

a story about detransitioning*

whether a person is cis, trans, nonbinary, questioning, unlabeled, or a combination of the above, surviving a world that treats gender nonconformity with violence, distrust, and disgust is traumatic.

gender abolitionists/postgenderism fails bcs it tries to enforce a lack of gender- trans liberation succeeds bcs it demands for gender nonconformity to be welcomed, not feared.

experiencing and performing gender is not the issue- the policing of gender is.

@f0x we used pack structs to save bits and worry about leaking memory, now we're concerned about forgetting virtual machines. Soon we'll be spinning up entire data centers for a project and then misplacing them like xkcd.com/1737/

then again if it wasn't throwaway i never would've gotten the 25$ / month hetzner tier :P
glad I remembered to cancel it immediately after it was done, instead of suddenly discovering in a month
